Scarlett Johansson is up for Ghost in The Shell

Finally saw this clip.

Straight out the anime :smokin

meh. not impressed. ill reserve full judgment until i watch (stream, im not paying for this).

ghost in the shell is one of the few examples considered the pinnacle of anime (and iconic in film). i mean that movie is 20 yrs old, released in 1996, and the attention to detail in that movie still amazes me. its creative direction, the writing, the music, the world creation. movie is rich like a JRPG.

ill watch it. im a big GITS fan, and sci fi movies are the move...but i was upset with casting already. ScarJo physically is perfect for the role. Girl thicker than a bowl of oatmeal, but i mean cmon son...

^ rinko kikuchi is def a go. lets not act like the main character's name isn't MAKOTO KUSUNAGI. just calling her major and casting scar jo is almost like a bad bollywood ripoff. shoutout to my DBZ family

Is there even 1 big movie with Asian protagonist? 1?! Everybody up in arms no African Americans nominated for oscars. Asians can't even get in movies about Asians

Rush Hour?
Rush hour is a good one... Kung-fu films with Jet Li or Jackie Chan I suppose. Jackie Chan last movie was 6 years ago... Karate Kid.

Asians are underrepresented in movies is my point

-The Major is a cold, calculating soldier who shows little to no emotion. ScarJo does not tap into that at all. Plus it would have been nice to see the Japanese protagonist played by a Japanese actress, but that horse been beaten already.

-I can already tell by the trailer that a) the production just wanted to cash in on a big name anime or b) they paid literally NO attention to the series plot wise. Probably both, but if you have seen the movies and both seasons, you can see that there will be conflicting plots in the movie. (The scene with the geisha appear in season 1 of the ANIME where as the fight scene in the water come from the ORIGINAL MOVIE).

-Throughout the whole series and movies GiTS tackles the issue as to what it truly means to be human. The Major was one of the first full-body cyborgs (all limbs prosthetic + full on cyberbrain) as she had a terrible accident as a child. She is seen throughout the series to even question if she really was human to begin with, if her soul, or ghost is even real or 1's and 0's. This was the reason Masamune Shirow named it GHOST in the SHELL (deriving from Gilbert Ryles' theory of "ghost in the machine", look it up).

Of course Hollywood chose to ignore the philosophical aspect of it, giving you yet ANOTHER rehashed "where did I come from?" origins story with a cute white girl doing somersaults, shooting robots, and explosions. Lol.

The plot of the GITS universe is so vast that you can't expect them to be able to grasp it all in a 90 minute live action film. Especially when you're trying to attract a wider audience than the hardcore Anime base. Similar to the Assassin's Creed movie.

Also you can't just do a live action version of the 1995 movie that would be a disservice to the fans. I like how they are taking familiar scenes from different sources a) as a fan we'll get to see that scene "come to life" albeit with CGI and b) to new viewers it'll show them some of the cool visuals that made GITS so popular.

GITS also dealt with the nature of self-identity and how it becomes affected with using a real human brain and cyborg bodies. Thus begging the question is your soul a part of your physical human body or your mind. Also this goes to the non asian playing an asian. Yes having a Japanese actress play the major would have made more sense, it wouldn't make the dollars and cents that Hollywood really cares about. While ScarJo isn't who I imagined as the Major, I can mess with it.

I would've personally rather they come up with their own branch-off storyline if that was the case

because I feel like chopping up the already complex storylines and throwing them all together in one movie is a disservice to the fans in and of itself. Each of those scenes deals with a specific bad guy during a specific time within the GiTS universe. BUT I'm not gonna continue to throw shade on this movie, I just feel like as a fan, a live-action version was a dream to me but they dropped the ball IMO.

even more so than blacks and hispanics imo. with blacks or hispanics you'll get some lead roles, but def lag behind whites. and its a pick and choose system with studios and what they want to sell.

word to red tails, with lucas getting rejected by all studios.

but with asians you barely get those lead roles, and not for lack of actors/actress.

in all 3 minority groups you'll get heavy typecasting. and a lot of times they (actors and actress) will do it with the hope that one day that awesome role will fall into their lap.

i don't care that this is white america. money talks, but change the status quo. foh with these movies with egyptian pharaohs played by the whitest of actors.

ghost in the shell is my ****, and i wanted true to story attention paid to it. **** white america. if you want to put out a live action version of a work of art, you better keep it really 100 and cast a Japanese actress, period. this isn't dell customer service where the phone tech named steve is really a dude named muneeb living on the other side of the world.

whitewashing needs to stop man fo real. too much talent in the minority group.

they want to put out a whitewashed GITS movie, with scarJo, but they don't want to put out a black widow origin story with scarJo...:rolleyes hollywood logic.
