"car" that gets 80+ mpg for about $7,000 vol: wut?

I made a thread about this last year. Only way I'd drive is if it was given to me or a company car. I would however drive this before I drove a smart car.

Actually would cop... Wouldn't drive on a Friday or Saturday night but would use as a day to day car for work.

I've been hearing about this car for years, and highly doubt it's going to happen. This appears to be nothing more than a vaporcar.

Interestingly enough, there was a very similar vaporcar scheme in the 1970s. Look into the 20th Century Motor Corp. and their car "The Dale". It's a pretty interesting story about a transsexual entrepreneur who conned investors out of millions of dollars, advertising a 3 wheeled car at an ultra low price, very much like the Elios.

People are so afraid of 'new.'

I feel like its the opposite in this case. People seem ready to welcome this "car" with open arms when there are a number of blatant red flags that should alert people that something isn't right.

Most notably... they are advertising 80+mpg, yet the company hasn't even decided on a motor for the "car" yet. Some information released by the company says it will be a Suzuki powerplant, other information claims a Geo 3cyl, while other claims are that the engine will be a new design manufactured by Elio themselves.

They are also laughably advertising a a 5 star crash test safety rating. This is ludicrous not because it is an extremely small "car", but because it is intended to be registered as a motorcycle and motorcycles are not subject to crash test safety ratings. As it stands they have not tested the "car" and have no proof whatsoever to back up this claim.
