So there aren't any passages in the Koran encouraging murder and violence?
There definitely is. If a group of people one up your community and try to kill you than by all means defend yourself and loved ones. If a group of people harm your women/ livelihood/ children/ land by all means defend yourself. Given that the Quran was revealed roughly 1400 years ago, being a muslim at that time meant putting your life at steak. Even till this day being a muslim causes harassment in many communities.
Being a muslim at that time caused great harm to oneself and family. Meandering from the polygamist idealogy and te idealogy and beliefs of forefathers was considered an atrocity and murder was the result. So yes Muslims can defend themselves and their religion if one is in situation where self defense is the option. And the Quran elegantly displays that.
I'm sure you can go to some half written website that picks sentences out of the Quran. One being that the English translation can never grasp the palindromes and arabic structure itself. Second understanding the history can help understand the Quran too. But people spend their whole lives trying to understand it so I honestly don't expect you/ myself or anyone here to completely understand it.

You do understand that the prophet (peace be upon him) went through 3 major wars because of his ideology? You do know that the quraish people waged war on Muslims. You do know that the people of mecca practically beat the Muslims out of their own city? You do know that pharoah killed slave all firstborn muslim babies every other year to control population?
You have to understand the history and context.
Your point is right some people see what they want to see and use it for evil. I agree there with you and that is unfortunate. And I am saying that is a very small part of "Muslims" who make up roughly 1.57 billion people on the planet
