Americans taking fewest vacation days in four decades

The hell with that!
laugh.gif
I make sure I take 7 weeks of vacation every year! Even if I have NOTHING to do!
This!!

Most of my time off work was spent at the crib sleeping in, playing with the little one, doing random stuff around the house and staying up mad late playing video games.  There's a lot of stuff that doesn't get done when you work all day.

My old job earned my 26 paid pays off a year (plus 13 paid holidays).  Best believe I used every damn day.

I don't see why I need a vacation when I haven't accomplished anything much. I will take a vacation once I set out on my goals and reach new plateau's and have completed a task and or objective I have set out.

You ain't gotta take a vacation but you for damn sure better use all your vacation days, if you get those.

Leaving vacation days on the table is the same as not picking up a check or showing up to work on a holiday and working for free and I don't think any of us would do that.

I haven't had anything less than 5 weeks in a few years and I generally use all that time for a combination of things.

From making Thanksgiving week a full week off, same thing between Christmas and New Year's.

We're doing it wrong compared to Europe - someone said 4 weeks and that's about right. I think it's more 5 and most the country is shutdown in August.

As a manager, I welcome and try to get my staff to take PTO. The only thing I ask of them is to give as much advance notice if they're on a project and to ensure they map out how their responsibilities are going to be taken care of

Edit:
At my old firm, you had the ability to roll 2 weeks of PTO into the following year, so you could get anywhere between like 7-9 weeks depending on what level you were.

Or at your choice, you could be paid out unused PTO at year-end.

Corporations must love you, good worker bee. Not mad at that.

For sure, brah :pimp:

This is a great mindset to have man, but you take vacations because they're a perk that you EARN.  Everyone is entitled to a break that they earn, IMO.

No doubt man. I most definitely hear ya.

I hear ya. Everyone does need reprieve but I have three days off during the week and I can call out whenever I please. My current job gives me that. It's gonna be a different story when I start the USPS job.

I'm 25. You?

I'm not "one of those people", what do you mean?

Ever since your pic was posted in the all denim I thought you were fresh out of HS man

I meant those ppl as in who the article is talking about as far as the stats. I didn't know you were one of those 9-5 dudes foregoing paid vacation cuz you young and haven't accomplished anything yet.

I'd still say overall this article is about ppl in their 30s who've been at it a while and the whole dispute being about ppl not taking time off in fear of losing their jobs despite stats saying ppl who do take vacation still get promotions and raises like anyone else and if you don't go on vacation you're liable to lose your job at a higher rate than those who don't.

The culture at my job is to not take many days. We don't get paid out for vacay days, which is kind of a scam, but we do get a lot of the breaks off that schools get except no summer break. What sucks is that summer is the busiest time for the work I do so it's highly frowned upon to take more than like 3 days off in the summer.

If we got paid out I would have hella bread for not using days. It's also semi encouraged that you respond to emails every so often if you're on a long vacay. I completely said **** that when I went to Europe and refused to do a single work related thing. That's my new policy on vacay days, I refuse to do work on them.

I was actually had an interesting convo about this somewhat the other day with someone I met through another friend. He was saying some tech companies (which many have super benefit packages) were looking to or had implemented a vacation allowance that would be reimbursed to like $5000...and you HAD to use. Logic being that it is more important to the company's POV in terms of your productivity to actually take vacation and not just add another 5k to your salary and they would be out the same money.

I wish I had a job like that!

I was lightweight about to quit this manufacturing job on the first day because they basically said that due to me starting at the beginning of Oct I likely wouldn't get the amount of hours in by June 1st or July 1st to qualify for vacation until the following year...**** if I'm going to work close to 2 years without a vacation at a job with mandatory overtime regardless if they pay well. I'm going to stack for a bit and bounce.

So far this year I've called in sick once, left work early once (I had strep throat), and took one personal day.

Then again...I work 13 hour shifts so I don't really find myself feeling like I don't get enough time off from work.

3 day work weeks>_______

This is for sure happening in tech companies around the Bay Area.

One of the reasons why working in the states is not on my list.

Eff all this slave work, europe is where its at :smokin

This right here...Went this summer for 2 months and a week to Egypt and had a blast. Heck I'm heading back there right now for a week  and then to Cuba for a few months. Had some money saved up and been traveling a lot lately.

Once I come back I plan on just working here for a 4-5 years and then move out to Europe. Its more laid back and a better quality of life IMO

Yo, people really think that's me in the True Religion crap. Who started that rumor? That is not me.

Also ohhh I gotcha'. I'm not even considered full time and I do full time hours. I'm "on call" which is looked at as "help" so to speak. I work four days a week and have three days off.

City Carrier Assistant.

You delusional bruh. Finna be in for a rude awakening.

not if he does it right. this is my 7th year of teaching, I do no work on holidays/weekends/summer vacation and it's been that way since year 3. teachers get prep periods and get out at 3:30-4:00, too. really is one of the better gigs if you manage stress/time well, like kids, and ain' chasing stacks.

18 hours of sick time to waste before the end of the year....  We cant carry over sick days only vacation hrs.

guess its use it or lose it!!!!

This is how my year is looking so far.... Though I still have 1 more week to choose from but I'm not sure if I'll even take it.

On top of this, I get 3-4 days off every week! :smokin

I love my job. I get so much time off. I took of 2 of my own vacation days and I have off for 14 total days during Christmas. I get over 25 days of my own time plus a week for spring break and at least a week or two for Christmas break and off for almost every major holiday.

And believe me.. I'm using EVERY last one of them. We do do pay outs if you get to a certain level, but that'll probably never happen for me. I enjoy taking time.

for some reason i like working, vacation was never an option, it's more of a distraction, if you manage life right everyday's a vacation, might lose some sleep, but yeah.

7 straight weeks to end the year having at least one day off each week :pimp:

The gift and the curse of having to take all your Vacay time in the calendar year, no rollovers :rolleyes

Love my job 19th is my last day of the year. I don't have to come back until the 6th of Jan. we get 28 days of vacation and unlimited sick time. We get a week off during the summer for shutdown and 2 weeks off for winter shut down. Get paid every holiday the day before and after. If we work on either of those days it's double time.

I switched to 12 hrs from 5 days a week. I love it.

I got tired of the m-f 6-2:30 schedule.
