Help us build a library with Room to Read & earn a special badge for your account!

So the goal was 5K and now we surpassed it, what's next Meth? The more the better?

One of my favorite parts of the NT community. I like that you select trustworthy organizations  to support.

Happy Holidays!

Thanks, we try our best to carefully research each organization we support, and sites like charity navigator and guidestar can be useful tools in that respect.  They don't tell the whole story, because what good is an organization that accounts for 100% of its funding as "program expenses" if those programs aren't, themselves, effective and cost efficient, but we look for trusted organizations that practice transparency and have a strong, proven track record.

Room to Read is one of my favorites, and I'm glad to see that it's become a clear community favorite as well.  We're honored to support their inspiring work.
So the goal was 5K and now we surpassed it, what's next Meth? The more the better?
Absolutely!

As I listed in the topic post,
 • $25 will fill one library shelf with books
 • $100 will provide a child with one year of comprehensive literacy education
 • $250 will provide a year of support for a girl in our Girls’ Education program
 • $500 will fill a grade 1 or 2 class with workbooks and teacher guides to teach reading
 • $5,000 will establish a library in Asia
The more money we raise, the more Room to Read can accomplish.  Every single contribution matters - doubly so in this situation, given the matching incentives, transaction fee mitigation, and bonus funding opportunities provided by the Social Entrepreneurs Challenge.

One in seven adults worldwide cannot read or write.  The more children and communities we can help Room to Read reach, the better.

How about toys for tots method man. I donate every year to that organization. It's good for the kids during Xmas time b

haven't logged into NT in a while, but always happy to donate. :pimp:

Thanks again Meth for bringing this sneaker community to come together and donate to a great cause!
Just a reminder: the Social Entrepreneurs Challenge ENDS this Friday, December 5th.
If you were interested in earning a badge or making a bonus contribution, it's now or never.

Let's finish strong!

Thanks, @KMante  !

I should mention two things:

1)  As we've discussed, each organization that raises $100 or more in a day will be eligible for a random drawing to receive a $1,000 bonus.  KMante put us halfway there for today - and here's the kicker:  each organization is only eligible to win ONCE.  So that means our odds are actually BETTER late in the game like this.  If we can raise $100 a day for the next three days, we'll give Room to Read a good chance to take one last bonus win!

2)  The exact deadline is THIS Friday: 2 PM EST, 5 PM PST!

There is not much time left, so anyone interested in adding or upgrading these exclusive badges to your account should act fast.  If you know somebody who said they'd support this after pay day or that they'd chip in a bonus for every $X donated... now would be a good time to give them a friendly nudge via PM.

Details on the library YOU have helped sponsor will be released at the end of the event, so stay tuned!

I have an update for everyone:

Earlier today, I received this extremely gracious thank you letter from our friends at Room to Read, addressed to all NikeTalk community members:

If you can't read the image, here's a text version:
Dear NikeTalk Community Members,

Thank you so much for your dedicated and enthusiastic support of Room to Read through the Skoll Social Entrepreneurs Challenge!

Thanks to your generosity and passion for children’s education, the NikeTalk community raised $6,635  during the six week challenge; along the way, you helped us win two bonus challenges for a total of $10,000 extra! All-told, thanks to your donations – and therefore contributions toward the Skoll Community match –  Room to Read will receive over $60,000 in matching and prize funds. Your efforts were infectious and it was so fun to watch your community really transform our participation in the Challenge.

To show our appreciation for your dedication, we have allocated an honorary school library in Vietnam to the NikeTalk community. The library is located in the Tien Giang region, and our teams estimate that this library will benefit approximately 1,138 students over the course of eight years. I look forward to providing the NikeTalk community with an update about the library in the coming months.

Thank you again for your generosity and dedication!

Best wishes,

The Room to Read Team
I'm also pleased to announce that NikeTalk's annual contribution to Room to Read this year - separate from our participation in the Social Entrepreneurs Challenge - totals $30,000 and will help fund a school library project in Bangladesh and provide support for Room to Read projects like reading and writing instruction.  (This, too, was arranged to qualify for a matching grant.)

We'll be certain to share all future updates regarding the progress of the library in the Tien Giang region of Vietnam, the upcoming library project in Bangladesh, supported by this year's contribution, and the publication of an original children's book in South Africa, funded in 2013.

If you'd like to see us offer Room to Read even more support, we're currently holding a poll to determine the recipients of $15,000 in new donations in honor of NikeTalk's 15th anniversary.  To share your preference, simply stop by the related thread here: http://niketalk.com/t/613946/help-u...15-000-in-honor-of-niketalks-15th-anniversary and place your vote.

Thank you all once again for your generous support!

Great update. Thanks to everyone who participated.

Look forward to seeing the library progress updates.
