Referring to your favorite teams as "we"....

I get into this debate with my friends all the time. Is it ever okay to refer to your favorite sports teams as "we"...?

For instance...

"Man, I hope we win on Sunday. The Seahawks are tough."

"We really need another big man down low to win the Big 12."

"We never get the calls!"

...I, personally, don't think it is ever ever ever okay to say we. YOU ARE NOT ON THE TEAM, STOP SAYING IT!

If you were talking to Bill Self, Andy Reid, Coach K, Nick Saban, or any coach and said "Great win we had last night!" He would look at you like an idiot.

...am I right or overreacting?

Who cares honestly.

I think it's funny to poke on someone every now and then but its not that serious

I feel you op, I cringe when people say 'we the north'

I used it in a previous post in the nba thread :smh:

i have an issue with it sometimes. i'm sure i use it at times but i try not to. only time i'm absolutely cool with it is when you refer to your alma mater.

Without our $ these teams wouldn't even exist or would be irrelevant. So yes, I'm gonna say "we" all I want. I make sure to do this even more around people who have a problem with it

Why is it an issue?

people who hop teams using "we" bothers me. people who make it a personal thing when their team beat my team so they think they are better than i am

and using it for a school you didn't go to always seemed weird to me. had a friend who roots for UT get denied by UT, went to TAMU, and still referred to UT as we. like brah, they didn't eem want you.

most of it is pettiness, i know.

They just want to feel like they're part of a team

& bandwagon "fans" just want to fit in

The ones taken offense are guilty of it but just cant explain why they feel the need to say it
I dont have a problem with it, just dont like the lame fans that take it too srs and start fighting at games, bars etc

While I find it stupid and incorrect, I understand why people do it and don't get on them about i
Only time I ever catch myself doing it is with my alma mater

Yeah that's pretty much the only time I use "we"; whenever I'm referring to  Florida athletics. I spent too much money on tuition and tickets and too much time waiting in line for these events to not be a part of it. I'd have no problem telling Billy D or Muschamp: "Great win WE had last night!. WE really came back in the 2nd half..." etc. and so on. As for professionals, I don't really use "we" as much

Yea those type of fans are annoying. I hate those types but ive only encountered them at NFL games or bars that's showing NFL/College games. Other sports don't carry fans like that butttttt here in NC folks take their college bball allegiance serious whether they went to school there or not. **** talking is just apart of the culture amongst unc/Duke/ncst fans

Are you 'we'ing other companies you spend your money on?

Is that really a fair comparison?

The basis was if people didn't spend their money on them they wouldn't exist. How does that not apply?

I would find it awesome if he did
'We had a great release today' - referring to Nike
'We make an awesome sandwich' - Chick Fil A

It would be amazing

I get what you're saying.

Just think the aspect of a consumer of retail productcs and being a consumer of team you root for is a stretch is all

Well, I don't care at all about Nike, Chick Fil A, etc. Neither of them are out there representing my home town/area, compared to sports teams that represent a city and often the city's culture/people as well.

Go ahead and tell these fans that they can't use "we"

I know sports teams are businesses for the people who own and run them, but for the millions of fans who follow them, the teams are part of their identities.
