Referring to your favorite teams as "we"....

I know sports teams are businesses for the people who own and run them, but for the millions of fans who follow them, the teams are part of their identities.

And this is why people fight over 'teams'

My examples were obviously me being facetious

and using it for a school you didn't go to always seemed weird to me. had a friend who roots for UT get denied by UT, went to TAMU, and still referred to UT as we. like brah, they didn't eem want you.
bruh my old college roommate did the same thing for usc...except we went to gw...

Are they? What I see are people not understanding how teams function as a representation of a location and people. Seems clear to me that saying 'we' is fair.

 No.

I was poking fun at "should...be able to." Of course people can, and be able to. However, when particular fans use 'we' it's very annoying.

I find myself using "we" when I'm with other fans of my favorite team. If I'm talking to other fans, then it's usually "them".

Yeah I always say we when referring to the cowboys and Lakers. IDC
.
what's the ? Always asked " who is your team"
not that serious...

The basis was if people didn't spend their money on them they wouldn't exist. How does that not apply?

I would find it awesome if he did
'We had a great release today' - referring to Nike
'We make an awesome sandwich' - Chick Fil A

It would be amazing

That's what I am saying man. Like you're not going to spend money on a movie and say..."We made an awesome movie. Excellent.!"

I just have an issue like if I were to run into Andy Reid/Bill Self/Jeff Hornacek/Ned Yost after one of their games and said "Great win for us tonight! We really needed that!" ...he would look at me like "uhhhh what do you mean we...?"

I know I am nitpicking, just a pet peeve of mine.

I highly doubt a coach would react that way...they know fans have an attachment to a team, I think they would welcome the support. As long as people know its just in a form of support I don't see the big deal. Too many rules for things that don't really need rules. Support who you wanna support, say we, and whatever else.

I get into this debate with my friends all the time. Is it ever okay to refer to your favorite sports teams as "we"...?

For instance...

"Man, I hope we win on Sunday. The Seahawks are tough."

"We really need another big man down low to win the Big 12."

"We never get the calls!"

...I, personally, don't think it is ever ever ever okay to say we. YOU ARE NOT ON THE TEAM, STOP SAYING IT!

If you were talking to Bill Self, Andy Reid, Coach K, Nick Saban, or any coach and said "Great win we had last night!" He would look at you like an idiot.

...am I right or overreacting?
highly doubt a coach would look at you like you're an idiot. they sometimes refer to fans as part of the team. that's a you problem bruh

I have my pet peeves in sports, but this ain't one of them.

When referring to teams I root for...I use "we" AND "they". Sometimes it depends on the circumstance.

If I'm talking to a group of the same fans (like in a team thread)...it's usually "we".

When it's with outsiders or any other situation about the team..."they".

That's not strictly enforced though. It can switch up at any time because it's not one of those things I actively think about when I'm posting/talking.

However...
and using it for a school you didn't go to always seemed weird to me.
That might be the only exception for me.

Not that I have an issue with it, but it's kind of a weird deal when it's school-related.

Except I don't see people cheering and supporting businesses like they do sports teams

I'm a Laker fan b. Always have been, always will be. They're like familia. I root for them, I argue and debate for them, I wear the colors, I go to the games, I watch them on tv, I've met, sat and talked to and chilled with a bunch of them. It's a 'We' thing papi. That's my team. Sure, I may not get a check from the organization, but they've brought me so much enjoyment and entertainment over the years, they pay me back in other ways. I almost feel like you aren't a true fan if you don't use 'we'. You don't feel like you're a part of the team. You don't feel like your rooting matters, like it doesn't make a difference if you make sure you wear the same jersey and socks every time you watch because they always seem to win when you do. You cheer when they win, but it doesn't bother you when they lose. Nah that's not a real fan imo. That's just a spectator. Of course, there are extremes. I'm not saying get team tats, or fight opposing team fans, that's never okay, but I am saying, saying 'we' just makes sense if you feel your support actually matters. It's why home-court advantage means so much. That positive energy is a psychological boost for most players. I'm the 12th man.

You clearly are an outsider and have no idea how this sports fraternity works. There's no way they'd look at you sideways once you make yourself known as a fan. It's 'We' on a macro level. It's a different 'We' from the micro level that they have in the lockerroom. Our 'We' refers to the entity, which includes all fans, promoters, concession stand people, managers, employees, families, training staff, etc. It's one unit. Then there's the smaller, more literal 'We' which is encompassed by those in the lockerroom. And is really just the organization.

Now we're jumping to conclusions? Relax. I cheer for my teams and schools just like everyone else here.

I am just as big of a fan as everyone else, but that's what I am...a FAN...not a part of the payroll, not employed by the team, not apart of the team (other than rooting for them)...

Again, jumping to conclusions, calling me an "outsider"...? I know about sports and I know about rooting for teams...

...also you just broke down/analyzed the word 'we' man...c'mon now.

If you guys say 'we', that's fine I suppose, I mean I am not gonna say it, but to each their own. Was just wondering if this bothered anyone else.

I wasn't referring to you specifically. Just anyone with the general mindset that you have. I wasn't saying you were wrong for not using it per se, just stating why we do. I broke down the 'we' so you would understand what we mean when we use that word. It's just like how you say you cheer for 'your team, your school'...do you own the team? Do you own the school? 'My' is clearly a term of possession, or ownership, so you must own the team right? You see, it's that same type of situation when we take the words at face value and run with them.

What I find more disturbing is the "good game *insert sn here* " that I see in the NBA thread after games.

I really dont understand why anyone would have a problem with a sports fan saying "we" about his favorite team.  Normally, when there is a sports debate on NT, I can at least understand where the other side is coming from even if I dont agree with it.

This is not one of those cases.  I find it absurd that something like this bothers people.

for those bothered by it -- are you bothered when someone who supports your favorite team uses "we" ?
