Apartment smell...

There is a smell that I think is originating from the windows in my apartment. I can't even describe it cause its so unfamiliar.

It gets stronger when it's windy and even apartment maintenance can't figure out what it is.

Also it doesn't smell outside, in the bathroom or in my bedroom...

It has been this way since I moved in but sometimes it's potent and sometimes it's not.

**** is giving me a headache does anyone know of a fix or a way to determine what it is?

does mold have a particular smell?

my pops had it a few years ago in a bathroom because the ventilation sucked, but found out it wasn't dangerous to be around for people...was bad for the wood/base boards though

What did it smell like?

I had a peculiar smell emanating from my bedroom window a few weeks backs too but it stopped now that its cold (I assume)

Same. It was kinda like a raw smell, thought it was the trash outside.

I thoroughly disinfected the area, changed curtains and it still remained.

I read that it smells earthy/ musty

It hard to describe. The closest word I can think of is "sour". At first I thought maybe it was coming from the carpets but they changed them and its still here.

I'm tellin' you...some sort of rodent might have died in the walls.

What would one do in this situation? lol

Sounds like something died. It goes from musty to rancid when you get closer to the source OP. Also check to see if you have stagnant water somewhere. If you have gutters are they clogged.

Son, it's not any of the logical answers like a dead rodent or baby in the wall...son...it's a smelly poltergeist aka stank ghost.

R.I.P. OP...

Do u have pets op???

A street cat may be peeing outside yo apt.

Son,

But in all seriousness.. if it is something dead in the walls, what am I supposed to do in that situation? I can't bust open the wall and check and maintenance isn't going to believe a hunch.

edit:

No pets. Live alone. Top floor

You didnt call maintenance to smell it?

I did. They admitted there was a smell and attempted to smell my kitchen sink lol.

Their solution was to change the carpets. When I told the office manager it was still there he just had a dumb look on his face like he didn't know what to do.

Dead rodent, maybe a squirrel. Nothing you can do but request a unit change. Maintenance won't do anything especially with you living there.

I just saw your on the top floor. May not even be coming from your unit, the smell just might be traveling up from elsewhere. Either way, switch apartments and hope the leasing office waives the fee.

Stop paying rent. In some cities if an apartment is uninhabitable that is legal grounds to withhold rent.
