The HBO documentary Banksy Does New York asks, “Who owns art?”

On October 1st of last year, the popular, controversial street artist who calls himself Banksy announced he’d be spending the entire month in the five boroughs of New York City, exhibiting one new installation, graffiti piece, or performance artwork a day. Banksy posted pictures of the finished works, but wouldn’t say where they were located, which meant that Banksy fans had to hunt around the city to find them—all while hoping that the pieces hadn’t been removed or painted over before they could be discovered. Over the course of the month, Banksy stirred up controversy with the political content of some of the work, and provoked the usual brouhaha over whether street art is any different from everyday vandalism. But Banksy also got the citizens of New York talking nearly every day about art and social issues, and he had people paying more attention to their surroundings, looking for hidden Banksys. He kept folks on their toes.

Amazing doc. Going to watch Exit Through The Gift Shop again to compare.

Side note: Banksy on Amazon's MyHabit. I had to pick up a piece.

what makes these prints higher priced than on other sites?

In the description it states it's a reproduction...

this was dope, i watched it when they did they preview on like 2 or 3 weeks ago,

the part when the old man sold the paintings was crazy, someone is sitting on a nice chunk of change.

seeing all those hipsters get all wet over his stuff was cringe though, the piece with the horses rockin the night vision goggles was definitely the dopest piece.

Was an awesome doc for sure, just stumbled into it and couldn't tune away.

I think I analyzed that movie way too much. It's always nice to see his pieces. I think there is an app for it as well lol

its weak that a foreigner has to come to NY for the mainstream to accept what MANY ppl do daily with no recognition outside of the subculture of actual bombing.

he doesn't bomb.
its not graffiti.
he's not a writer.

:rolleyes

not hating but slightly annoyed at the fact that he is a street artist, not a writer, and gets recognition for being at the top of graffiti and when ppl think of graffiti that don't really know graffiti, he's one of the ppl they think of along with basquiat. or keith haring. or obey. those are street artist. yes there is a difference.

lastly, overlooking ppl that put a lot of work into bombing that actually live in NY and make NY what it is is extra wack. wild amounts of time go into finding a spot and getting up and staying up. but this guy takes a week or whatever off and puts installations up and ppl go wild. smh.

I found it terrible that they didn't cite "Style Wars" when they showed clips from it. I guarantee very few of his "fans" appreciate or are knowledgeable of actual graffiti. IMO Banksy fans are the equivalent to Lil Wayne fans who never listened to hip hop / rap before him yet see him on levels like Big, Pac, Jay, Em, Nas.

Also- if you bought a Banksy book, you're doing it wrong. You should've stolen it. He would've wanted you to see his art for free

Watched this tonight. I liked Exit through the Gift shop more but this was good too.
Just to add to the discussion, I don't think anyone who has even slight knowledge on the subject would try to argue that banksy is a top graffiti artist or writer. What he is doing is completely different and I appreciate both styles of art. Banksy may have started out as a street artist but at this point his works go further than that, he uses his fame to create reactions that become part of the art itself. And it is amazing how easily people play along and fall into his traps, the irony of some of the fans and "collectors" of his work is too much.

This guy and his work are amazing IMO. Is there A lot of hype behind it yes, but every singular piece has an obvious and distinct message. And the art dealers who are taking it and selling it are ridiculous.

Cracked me up when them boys pulled up on the scene wit some wet wipes tryna fix a peice

It's art not sport....to those with negative comments towards banks you aren't even discussing his art. Yall are discussing the non important reactions to his art and the recognition he gets. If all of you "purists" we're actually purists than why do yall care so much about who likes him and who does not.

The art is the important part not the person. That's why he stays anonymous,..yet you still discuss him. More than his art. Makes no damn sense. Peoples infatuation with fame and stardom is exhausting. Stop analyzing and just appreciate it.

If people don't like the art then they just don't like it. cool all art is subjective at the end of the day.

what i find hilarious however is how many art "purist" dislike him or try to deny him props because he doesn't live the life of a regular artist. It's sort of like him being an independent musician in a way. He puts out his art to tell a story, he doesn't have a million relationships with those in "power" and the admiration & worth of his murals are all left to the public, all the power is in the peoples hands and i feel like that really shakes up the "purist". Them not being able to control or shape what the people should clamor after
