Former Washington DC Mayor Marion Barry dies at age 78

For those of us not from DC...what is it that he accomplished that made him so beloved?

I can google this but I rather hear it from NTers.

some of the older NTers from the area could probably give you more detail but I know he created the summer job programs to help keep kids off the streets , benefits for seniors, home buying assistance for the working class, created more government jobs, helped open doors for african americans in management positions in DC and helped get scholarships for high school seniors to go to college, also he was easily accessible to the people.

Created jobs for many blacks in the city and was a big player in the civil rights movement.

Diego, because of Marion Barry, I (and thousands of other kids) had the chance of getting Summer Youth Jobs starting at the age of 14. I had a summer job at age 14 because of this man and his vision. So everybody of MY generation owes him thanks for that at least. Dude would walk around with $100 worth of $5's just so he could "look out" for the kids. He is the people's champ man.

Man between this, losing Chuck and the gentrification of DC, I honestly feel like Chocolate City is truly dead :smh: R.I.P. Mayor Barry.

The people loved Marion Berry because he took care of them. He was the last real politician who followed up on the promises he made. He was a huge fixture in the city, however he would always walk around and behave like a regular guy. Picture Obama just hanging around the hood with no security or anything like that. That's the type of respect Marion Berry had. he could go anywhere and be loved. I've met him plenty of times in personal and business settings and he was truly one of a kind. Not only did he fight for blacks, he fought for everyone. Even now he was still fighting the gentrification of the city. Which is truly ridiculous. I really encourage you all to see how they are displacing blacks in "chocolate city". Me personally, I will always have love for Marion Berry because of the summer jobs. I felt like the man at 16 making $17 an hour designing websites and it was all because of his summer job program.

R.I.P. Mayor Barry.
The thing about Mayor Barry was that he didnt do it for the money, thats the biggest thing.  He was the only politician Ive ever known to care about the people he was governing over his own personal interest.  That coming from DC, the political capital of the world, is reason enough to love him.
