Mass shooting kills mother of three, wounds five others
A mass shooting killed one person and wounded five members of the same family Saturday.
A confrontation led to fight, which ended in gunfire, killing Mary "Unique" Spears.
Afraid to show her face or to go outside her residence, a relative of Spears says that night, she and Spears had just left the funeral of another family member to celebrate his life inside the Joe Louis Post on Sherwood and 7 Mile on Detroit's east side.
A 38-year-old man inside who her family says they've never seen before, began harassing Spears, 27.
"He said, 'Can I get your name, your number,'" Spears' relative said. "She said, 'I have a man I can't talk to you.'"
But her family says the harassment continued until 2 am when on their way out, they say the man grabbed and hit Spears. Her fiancee confronted him as a fight broke out.
Then suddenly the man began shooting.
"He shot her one time," Spears' relative said. "And she tried to run. And he shot her two more times in her head."
The suspect fired more shots through the crowd injuring Spears' fiancee and four other family members who were sent to the hospital.
But for the young mother of three, known as "Unique," it was too late.
Detroit police say they quickly arrested the suspect after he tried to run. He's now behind bars, but this family is still living in fear.
"What was on your mind that you could be so evil," said Belinda Bailey, Spears' aunt. "Because she said no to you?"
Detroit police say the shooter is expected to be arraigned on murder charges Tuesday.
Notting Hill Carnival: Woman shares selfie after being ‘punched in face for telling man to stop groping her’
Mary Brandon spent nine hours in hospital following the incident during Monday’s festivities
This woman’s selfie taken at the Notting Hill Carnival has been shared thousands of times after she said she was punched in the face for telling a man to stop repeatedly groping her.
In a Facebook post which exposes the darker side of the annual street party “supposed to be about community and good vibes”, Mary Brandon said she spent nine hours at hospital receiving treatment following the alleged assault.
Ms Brandon encouraged others to raise awareness of her image and “get the word out that this isn’t OK”. Since being uploaded yesterday it has been shared more than 5,000 times.
Describing the incident at the celebrations on Monday, Ms Brandon said: “A man in the crowd grabbed my ****. When I told him not to he did it again.
“I pushed him away, exercising my right to tell a man to stop touching my body without my permission, so he took a swing at me and punched me in the face.”
A police investigation into the incident is now underway, theEvening Standard reported, and Ms Brandon’s message has encouraged other women to come forward with their own stories of sexual abuse at the event.
Another Facebook user, Hannah Dart, responded: “On my way home from carnival an amazing woman told me she'd had a broken bottle held up to her face when she'd yelled at a man for grabbing her friends boobs.
“I am so angry that these men take space and freedoms away from us to feed their own pathetic egos. Keep standing up for yourself, you did an amazing job.”
Ms Brandon said some of her friends had suggested it might be “best not to do anything at all” when presented with a similar situation.
But she said anyone who thinks it is “OK to treat women like this” should stay away from the carnival in future, adding: “I can honestly say I will always stand up to someone who thinks they can get away with this behaviour.
"I’d take a punch again from this loser or any other loser who thinks it’s OK to treat women like this."
I was waiting for this. Only a mater of time before somebody came in here to turn it around and say something negative about womenAnd women in america b!tchn about "street harassment" smh
