I'm thinking about joining a league this season. I'm alright, pretty average.

But I feel like if I practice and dedicate myself like I do Bball or Martial Arts, I would be a lot better at it.

Grew up in a bowling alley. Did leagues most of my youth and teenage years. Did one last year after a long layoff and still took first. Tips for beginners:

-Consistency is key. Generally, your approach, release, and follow through should be the same each throw. Stick to adjusting your target and your position on the approach as needed.

-Aim using the arrows on the lane. Set your eyes on a target and follow through reaching for that target. Ball goes where your thumb is pointing after release.

-"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result." That saying is perfect for bowling. True bowlers know how to adjust (target, ball speed, revs/spin).

-Lane conditions change as the game progresses. It will affect how your ball reacts. Mainly applies to those who hook or curve the ball.

-Yes, curving and hooking the ball is cool. But its pointless if you don't know the basics and you really can hurt yourself. Also, balls are designed to hook. The house balls at the alley are not.

-Strikes win games. Spares keep you in them. Open frames are like missed field goals and free throws. They WILL come back to bite you.

-Go across the lane when picking up a 10 or 7 pin. Easier than going straight along the gutter.

Getting good at bowling is really easy. All it takes is practice and solid coaching. Try practicing during the week in the morning or early afternoon. Cheaper rates. Plus more often than not someone will be bowling that can give you some pointers.

FWIW- Finished last league with a 181 average. Lifetime high game of 267. Struck out the first 9 frames then missed a 10 pin in the 10th frame. Still get mad about it almost 10 years later  What made it worse is a girl bowled a 300 earlier that same day.
