Official Entrepreneur/Business Thread vol.1

Great idea and perfect target market in Manhattan.

Diff sector kinda but some kids on my middle school football team the parents put them in the program at chelsea peir(I cant think of the name) for speed and agility training. Spending lots of money just so they can have the best shot to lower their 40 time by a fraction.

Best of luck to you. I work in the Healthcare sector as well and trust me these park ave drs with self pay patients are making bank and only seeing 8-15 pts a day.
There's def money to be made in that field. It's something I kinda want to do myself, but unsure how to tackle it. I had to handle workers comp at my last job, and the whole process is a mess when it comes to occupational clinic, especially when my employees need physical therapy. All programs were so generic, and not tailored to their needs. Wait time was also asinine even when scheduled ahead.

Had no idea about Kumon, thanks.
Kumon is big, especially in poorer nations. Last time I went back home, those after school sessions were packed with little kids.

Remember that you don't have to invent a new product, figure out your angle and roll with it.
Could always fill a need in a state/location a similar business isn't located and eventually become a takeover candidate if that other business is a big money corporation or has venture capitalists. They'll take you over since some instances your established presence is cheaper than them creating one in that region.

While true, the biggest pros about a franchise is that reputation is already established and everything is structured.

Again, just need to find an angle. You don't need to be the first player into the game. Apple sure wasn't the first one to enter the MP3 player and digital music field.

There's nothing wrong with your train of thought though. Remember how Walmart did it when Kmart reigned supreme. They got their start in the boonies and branched out.

The Midwest is going to be where folks want to be at. Cheap land and relaxed laws, both for environmental and other regs.

Here's a great blog to help you with marketing. This is a very interesting article on marketing yourself with luxury items sort of "fake it to you make it" theory : http://www.quicksprout.com/2014/12/10/how-spending-162301-42-on-clothes-made-me-692500/
He also has another one titled how a Ferrari made me $1M or something like that

This was discussed in the dressing better thread quite a bit. I don't want to open a can of worms so I'll refrain from adding anything.

I serve as a marketing and branding consultant currently for a friend's shop (it's a motorsports place) and I'll agree with Patel in the article...image is everything.

I have a logo in mind. I might take you up on your offer.
I know you can use tax write off as a huge advantage, but nothing beyond that. There are hosting sites that will not charge you fees if you can show evidence that whatever you plan to host is for a non profit. (The one I refer to escapes my mind as of now, I'll edit if it comes to mind).

Aside from HTG's gracious offer, if anyone else is looking into getting a logo made or even a website built, check 99designs.

I had my logo made a couple of years ago and I only put $300 up. I was really happy with the outcome. It was a lot better than local freelancers who wanted to charge $x and unsure how many hours it would take.

Yes , even in my company one of our most complimented on features is how proffesional we are compared to most of the tutor/lessons field just because we supply our staff with branded polo's. Attire makes a huge difference.

Look, you want to open a stip club right?  You're going to need to buy or rent a property.  Renting is going to be expensive as hell when they find out what type of establishment you are running.  Insurance is going to be a grip as well.  You're going to have to get a license for booze from your county/state.  And you're going to have to find some muscle.  Next you have to market your new strip joint and you're going to have to have some decent chicks working in there at first to get people in the door and to take business from other ventures in your area.  All I'm saying is if you want to dive into that life, you might as well get a few current 'working girls' under your wing or break some new ones into it.  From there you build your clientele, meet some of the 'players' in that industry, start bringing in some side change to pay for this club you want to open etc.  In turn you get cash and more and more girls under your management and you have an easier transition once you do decide you are ready to open your club.  That's how I'd finesse it anyways.

I'm one half of a food truck we'll be rolling out this spring in a partnership with my current job I'm cooking at. Industry questions are welcome.
Another NTer that's into food truck! What state and food you working with?

I'm in mn. The food will be home style for the most part. Should be fun  I'll never have a free moment once it's up.

One of the sites I use for college textbooks: http://bookboon.com/    but are you interested in more owning a business or working in one in an upper management position?

a business major/minor is aimed to teach you how to become a manager at an already established company. most of the skills you learn wont be as useful (at all) when starting your own business.

i would suggest seeing if your school offers any entrepreneur classes or if theres a club. if not, no need to worry there are plenty of online courses that are top notch and free to view

i recommend anyone thinking of starting their own business to check this series out, its a stanford class that started this past semester where each class a guest speaker who is already a successful business owner comes in and speaks on a specific aspect of starting a business.

full course list: http://startupclass.samaltman.com/

Basically could start with sports since I'm a sports writer and I wanna do these random sports articles on athletes I find intriguing. Not a breakdown of games or anything (although that could be good for a podcast) but just like a stroll down memory lane and analysis of athletes. I also trade stocks so I wouldn't mind discussing the tribulations of trading, that days activity or whatever.

Obviously I could do a blog but blogs are meh.
i know you already write for BR and BR sounds a lot like what you're talking about

what aspects of BR are not living up to expectations for you to feel the need to start your own thing?

for easy to make websites check out wordpress or squarespace. start small, nothing wrong with a blog. do your thing, get it out there for people to see, encourage community feedback and find people that are also passionate about the topics you cover. ask them if they wanted to give writing a shot and as your community and writer base gets bigger and bigger eventually your one man blog can turn into a content company.

gotta plant and water a seed before you can have your tree

Ah I see. Only been to MN once and that was Eden Prairie for a job. Friendly folks.

I ask since I wanted to know how you would cover insurance for your workers since you need to provide for them.

I assume this would have to be a seasonal thing? Since you guys get mad snow and all.

That's like a pair of nice trousers.

Can't be too afraid to spend the money.
