Sling TV, a new web-TV service offered by Dish Network, will allow subscribers to stream ESPN through the internet as part of a $20 per month package, Peter Kafka at Re/code reports.

Dish says the service will be available soon and will come with 10 other non-ESPN channels, including TNT, TBS, CNN, Food Network and Cartoon Network.

ESPN's current WatchESPN service requires viewers to receive ESPN as part of their TV package.

The new service, according to Kafka, will appeal to those who want to watch cable television – sports broadcasts in particular – but do not want to remain tethered to standard cable TV subscription bundles. In October, HBO made a similar announcement that it would makes its HBO Go service available as a standalone product.

The deal does come with some stipulations. Sling TV will be a "personal subscription service," meaning it can only be used on a a single device at a time, unlike other services like Netflix. For users who want to watch it on a regular television instead of a computer or tablet, a device that connects web TV to televisions, such as a Roku box, will be required.

Local broadcast stations and the broadcast networks will not be available. Nor will Apple TV be included, though Kafka writes that Apple TV users will be able to "mirror" the stream from their iPhone or iPad to their set top.

Hmmm... $20...

Considering going without Cable/DTV when my house is built so this interests me but $20 seems a bit high, no?  Not sure what going rate for that kind of streamed content would be.

I think it's a little high, too, but I haven't seen a price point for the HBOGo standalone.

Have to wonder what cable and satellite are going to do in response to these kinds of moves.

I figured HBO go would come in around their rack rate they offer on cable/dtv at like $15.99 or whatever.  Most people don't pay that though because of "Promotions".

Paying like $260 a month between internet and Directv (not bundled)

alot of channels are doing this.... i read last year alot of channels are going to do separate package deals which include streaming services ala like netflix....

i think i saw fox is gonna do it by the end of the year ala fox/fx/fxx/ their movie channels and 24/7 streams of their most popular shows of past and present.

This is gonna be the wave soon... local channels and ppl getting packaged certain channel deals...

cause lets face it as many ppl said for the most part id say most ppl probably watch maybe 15-25% of the channels they have on cable... the others are fillers, ppv, special events, music channels, interactive channels, movie order channels...

Overpriced, I'm all for a cable alternative but this isn't the one for me.

Can you elaborate?

I pay $25 a month for Dish Network and get 50+ channels, most in HD. This includes all of the channels mentioned with that Sling TV. Makes no sense to pay $20 for 10 channels, vs $25-35 for 50-100 channels that don't tie up your internet connection.

I like the idea of the package, but for $20 it just isn't worth it to me.

Definitely overpriced...

I only pay $5 a month for NFL mobile, which gives you NFL network, RedZone, whatever games are on your local channels, and TNF, SNF, MNF.
