I told him why should i be loyal to a team that has not done anything to make me happy as a fan?

He was a raider fan and i told him that for the past ten years your team has dissapointed so why do you feel obliged to root for them?

In my opinion i feel if the team management doesnt bring success to a team within 5 years i should no longer feel obligated to root for them and can switch to a more successful team that will make me happy

Do whatever feels comfortable for you. These teams don't know nor care we exist, it's a very one sided relationship
There was a thread about bandwagon and fair weather fans a some time ago

Wouldn't changing your teams every 5 years get old? Like how do you even explain that to people?

"Well I used to be a Patriots fan, but man... couldn't hang with 'em after 2009. Rough patch. Steelers are my squad now."

"Man... these days are rough. Don't know if I can do it anymore. Those last couple chips were nice, but I'm a Seahawks man now."

Just seems silly to me. Do you, though.

I just say let a man root for who he wants to root for.

Sports are entertainment at the end of the day man. You're supposed to enjoy it.

I'm not saying change teams and bail on who your team is just because they're doing bad, I'll never bail on my Lakers.

But I've been upfront and honest about liking Rodgers and the Packers even though I LOVE my Chargers. I've only had one team I officially rep in my signature since I joined NT in 2005, and it'll never change. But I choose to be honest about being supportive of another player and team when my team isn't playing. It's how I enjoy the NFL.

I've been called a clown numerous times, and I'll continue to be called a clown for the rest of my life on NT.

No damns given. I ain't changing my screen name and I ain't hiding.

I enjoy supporting who I like.
You should too.

The jokes and slander might come with the territory but at the end of the day if you're happy and secure with yourself then that's all that matters.

Root for who you like, stick to it, and don't be afraid of the jokes.
Embrace it.
Life's too short to be ducking and hiding from people because of how you wanna root for sports teams

You either get it or you don't. You're either truly a part of something bigger than you or you're not. It's not a big deal either way, it's just sports I guess, but yea.

this. how can you develop that attachment if you're flip flopping every few years? you can't. and for some people, there's emotional attachment involved with their teams. for others, not a big deal. so depends where you stand from that perspective.

Eh like who you like. You don't necessarily owe an explaination for it. Its kinda lame if you jump from team to team, but what should my opinion really matter.

I just don't get how for example someone could be a Miami Heat fan the last 4 seasons. Enjoy seeing them winning 2 titles and going to the finals 4 times only to pick a new team to like now that their not as good anymore. If you can support a team during the good years, you should be able to support them during the dry years as well.

That said, ice city explained it pretty well.

i do think jumping from team to team is ridiculous. one thing to follow or root for a new team every few years. but i don't think you can refer to yourself as a fan doing that.

I don't think there's anything like belonging to a group of people that you share a passion with and one day achieving together.

Repped each one of you!! :nthat: :nthat: :nthat:

I cant take anyone seriously (sports opinion wise anyways) who switches allegiances every couple of years.

To each their own but I just cant jump ship when things are bad. It makes those winning seasons that much more sweeter, knowing that you've been through the good and the bad.

I have no idea how you can change teams every 5 years if they don't win; that is extremely lame to me

I am 4 for 4 and will rep my city no matter how many times they let me down

there might be times where I hate their moves or what they do but I will still be a fan; just might not support them with my funds

with the exception being a team that is making no effort whatsoever to put a competetive product out there.

why would an organization want you or someone like that to be a fan?  if a star player gets hurt, draft picks don't pan out, or the team thinks long term and starts a rebuilding process to achieve sustained success, your going to jump ship on them.

what would make you happy as a fan as well?

lastly, do you live in miami or atlanta by any chance?

I don't change teams but I will pay way less attention if the organization is a dog for multiple years in a row. They don't deserve my attention in that case. But I don't root for others

I live in los angeles fam

i think alotta ppl jump teams because they are more fans of a player then a team ala lebron

same here on the LA part.

you probably right about the individual player part though.     it was so many 76ers aka Iverson fans out here back in his heyday.    I seen a friend of mine I went to high school with who was always talkin about he was a die hard 76ers fan back then.   I asked him about michael carter williams and them possibly getting the #1 pick.   his response, "man i don't **** with the 76ers"

i've noticed the team switiching seems more acceptable or doesn't get criticized nearly as much in basketball though.   someone could switch from the cavs to heat and back to the cavs because their a lebron fan. aside from a small portion of diehard cavs fans no one is going to call them out on it though.

football is a whole different story though.    if someone was a terrell owens fan and liked the eagles because of that, only to switch over and be a cowboys fan the next season, i don't think either fanbase would be nearly as understanding.      same with a raider fan pulling for the broncos because they like peyton or what have you.

The only way I would consider switching the team I rooted for is if said team moved out of my area and was replaced by an expansion team.  Even then it might be hard.

I will always find it ridiculous when people jump from team to team personally, but everyone is different.  I just personally think hanging around the bad times will make the eventual sweet times that much sweeter.  Like take my Warriors for example.  We have had very few good seasons in my lifetime.  That fact makes this season that much sweeter (even if it doesnt amount to a deep playoff run).

The reason these franchises keep climbing in value (and sleep on beds of cash piles) is BECAUSE of the mentality a lot of fans have - blind loyalty no matter what. It's why I always say if the time does come root for who you want to root for, and there are really are no rules.

As a grown man. You gotta stick with your team through the good and bad times. I feel like only females and children change teams every year or when a team doing bad. If you support them through the good times. You should be man enough to support them through the bad times. Check my signature. those are my teams. Win, lose or draw. Them teams in my signature can go 0 and whatever. I will still support them.

I know some folks who've left their wives, gfs, husbands even their family easier than leaving their favorite sports teams. There's someone out there who disowned their brother, sister, family etc because of some small issue. But when their beloved T'Wolves draft 5 point guards at the same time, they stick with it. Supporting your favorite team while get drummed by 40, 50 points every night while you sit back and watch doesn't make you a man.

It's those people and those who will blindly root for a team no matter that keep these teams going. Take the Raiders or even NYK. Sell out every game. How? Blind allegiance.

I don't care one way or the other "how" people root, I just grew up with the mindset as a child, these are the teams that appeal to me, now stick with them for life. And I have.

But people that root for local teams, what happens when you move? Or when the team moves?

Are you a Raider fan, then a Ram fan, then back to the Raiders, then nobody cuz no local NFL team in LA?

Are you a Hornet fan, then they move to New Orleans, so you become a Pelican, but then the Bobcats are created (local to you now) so you drop the OG Hornets, for the new Hornets?

Do you root for the Seahawks, Mariners, Thunder? Or switch to the Blazers as your "local" team?

What if you live in North Dakota? Do you just not follow sports?

The "local" fans don't make any sense, unless they just plan on living in one major city forever, and no teams move. *shrugs*
