President to propose free community college on Friday

I thought you only had to pay it back if you fail classes or fall below a certain GPA

No. FASFA is just a loan. If you fail then you pay it back. If you graduate you pay it back. The longer you stay in school then you don't have to pay it back, until 6 months after you finish.

Grants and scholarship make school free. Not loans.

Then we are talking about something different. i know plenty of people that got free cash to go to school as long as grades were good and this was 7 years ago. Never paid a cent.

What's with the whining? Read the fine print. O ain't talking 'bout giving everyone a blank check to attend a 2 year colleges. We're talking about investing in the continued success of students who maintain good grades and are willing to work hard.

I've read enough confession posts to know half of y'all struggled in community college, so the money wouldn't be "wasted" on y'all.... It'd go towards those who are really about their education.

Granted this proposal is bit redundant given the millions of free money available in the form of scholarships to genuinely hard working students with good grades, this aint a bad thing; there are certainly much more worse things in the world.

As someone previously noted, it's evidence of the pathetic state of our nation when folks whine more about this than the profligacies of our military and the 1%.

Yeah that's not true. Fafsa pays for my classes period. I file one every year, and they take care of my classes for that school year. I don't have to pay them back ****. I'm not in financial need either.

But it's no surprise you're against it. Like someone else said, you don't give a **** about the next man.

Yeah, I think you better educate yourself on this. Grants and scholarship you don't pay back. FASA will pay for your classes, but you pay it back, with interest.

Ole boy is right.

FAFSA is a acronym for the application. You get a reward package that will either be loans, grants, work study and scholarships, or a mixture of them

If they offer a student a loan and they accept it, they have to pay it back

You might not be getting loans, or are in for a rude awakening one day brah

I went to a CUNY my 1st two years for free (thanks TAP, PELL, mom being poor) then went to a 4 year university and did great

I think it's good for ppl who did horrible in HS + can't afford to pay for college and don't qualify for grants

Kids that can't do well in high school don't deserve any kind of free ****

Sir if you believe that that FASFA money is free and you'll never have to pay it back then your education is failing you and you should drop out. Seriously.

Maybe it works differently in wherever ya''ll are at.  But out here in Cali, a BOG fee waiver is included when filing out an application. I'm not paying ish.

If you are in NYC and get TAP and go to a CUNY, you gon be aight

If you go to NYU your *** is grass

The gov't should pay for a "financial literacy for college students" program because some of the stuff I am reading in here regarding FAFSA is downright laughable but wholly scary... x :smh:

Obama Proposes 2 Years of Free Community College

President Barack Obama announced a proposal Thursday to provide two years of free community college tuition to American students who maintain good grades.

“Put simply, what I’d like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for everyone who’s willing to work for it,” Obama said in a video filmed Wednesday aboard Air Force One and posted to Facebook. He made the announcement as part of his pre-State of the Union tour and will formally lay out the proposal Friday in a speech in Tennessee.

The White House estimated it would save the average community college student $3,800 annually and said it could benefit nine million if fully realized.

White House Domestic Policy Director Cecilia Munoz said the proposal is a federal-state partnership, with federal funding covering 75 percent of the tuitions and participating states will be expected to pick up the rest of the tab. Munoz said legislation would be needed to approve the plan and repeatedly declined to say how much it would cost, saying more details about the funding source would come in the president’s budget for the next fiscal year due next month.

“This is a moment that is equivalent to the moment when we made high school universal,” Munoz added.

The proposal would undoubtedly face opposition from the new Republican-controlled Congress. Munoz did not say how the president hopes to pass the legislation through Congress, adding the White House had yet to run it by lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

Not excited about this at all.

How will we pay for it?

If everyone can go to a two year university, an associates degree will literally be worthless. I mean they aren't much now but it still sets you apart.

this has to be the dumbest **** i've read on NT in a long time.

how will we pay for it? sounds like you don't have a problem with the cost of education in this country today.

education debt. IT ******* TRUMPS CREDIT CARD DEBT. its currently in the trillions of dollars. and for such an economic power, its an absolute shame. it really is. and here you have a president who proposes an idea to make education more accessible for everyone, and you are upset about it?

you paid by fox news or something wtf is wrong with you? there are COUNTLESS kids who dream to go to school, but can't afford it. if you can knock out 2 years free and have those credits transfer (which is the idea) than that makes getting degrees THAT much more accessible!

We, the United States of America, spent a trillion dollars fighting in afghanistan and iraq, and thousands died. That to me should be a cost to be disgusted with.

meanwhile education costs rise, our infrastructure is in shambles, but congress could care less, particularly the right.

is more information needed about the plan? sure, it would be great to know how this new system can get setup. but you better believe im excited for this, and i already graduated college.

:smh: we gotta do better.
