This is insane.

Nigeria so inept and corrupt they couldn't do anything if they wanted to.

RIP.

I have to ask what is Boko Haram's goal?

Who would want to live in a state run by them?

I think they're just rebels without a cause.
What we know about the attack
No one knows for sure how many people the Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram slaughtered during its six-day rampage in the northeastern town of Baga. A lone and speculative early report said 2,000 dead, though subsequent counts suggest "dozens" or "hundreds." But there is little question this is a massacre of breathtaking and possibly unprecedented severity, even for Boko Haram. If you zoom out, though, you can see that a crucial part of this story is the Nigerian military's repeated and demonstrated indifference to the lives of northern Nigerians.

Here is what appears to have happened:  On Saturday, January 3, Boko Haram fighters in pickup trucks drove up to a military outpost in Baga. The Nigerian troops immediately began fleeing; Boko Haram captured the outpost by noon. In the next few days, the group raided surrounding villages, killing civilians. On Wednesday, it overran Baga itself, beginning a days-long process of methodically razing buildings and killing everyone the group saw.

"When they neutralized the soldiers, they proceeded to Baga and started killing everyone on sight," a witness told the New York Times. "There was no pity in their eyes. Even old men and children were killed."

Here is what we know about why they did it:  It is still not totally clear why Boko Haram so viciously attacked Baga. But the closest thing to evidence of a motive came on Friday. As Boko Haram slaughtered Baga's residents, its fighters visited several nearby villages. They shot villagers, apparently at random, and commanded the survivors not to vote, the Wall Street Journal  reports.

I learned a bit about Boko Haram when I participated in some of the marches and discussions about the school girls that went missing about 9 months ago. I haven't really done much research of my own on them, so what I say may not be completely accurate.

They're pretty much an Islam extremist group in northern outskirts of Nigeria. There are 3 main languages, and the less popular language Hausa is typically spoken by the muslim Nigerians. Boko Haram is pretty much terrorizing those people because of what's being taught. Their main goal is to do away with western education if I remember correctly.

I don't believe anyone wants to rock with them, but by kidnapping children and terrorizing communities, they are leaving some people without a choice.

P.S. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I ******* hate Boko Haram... Lived in Abuja for half of last year when they bombed it twice...

I can't imagine 2000 people just dead. I honestly can say I don't care if it gets me banned I hope all those ***** die. Why kill our own people?

I love Nigeria and it's people but these are things that make it so hard for me to ever imagine really living there full time again.

2000 dead and no one will be held accountable smh.

I just wanna know who's funding them and/or why the us/euro ignoring it.......well I know why cause Nigeria has a lot of resources but it's pretty ****** up.

They'll let Boko destroy damn near everything and then come in and wipe them out so they can profit off that oil

world is so ****** up.......also think the Nigerian president is shady but I don't know too much about their politics so maybe he's not

A lot of Africa will never truly flourish because outside forces will fund these groups to keep **** uncivil

“Al Qaeda are our elder brothers,” a Boko Haram spokesman told the Guardian in its first major interview with a Western newspaper. In August 2011, he said, “Our leader traveled to Saudi Arabia and met al-Qaida there. We enjoy financial and technical support from them. Anything we want from them we ask them.”

Then there’s the black market money. Beyond a hatred of Western education, economic motives may have also driven Boko Haram’s recent abduction of the schoolgirls. A robust and terrifying slave market hums in Nigeria and neighboring countries. “Kidnapping has become one of [Boko Haram's] primary funding sources, a way to extract concessions from the Nigerian state and other governments, and a threat to foreigners and Nigerian government officials,” according to West Point’s Combating Terrorism Center. It is worth “millions of dollars in ransom money.”

Boko Haram, for example, was paid $3 million when it freed a French family last year. Then this week, it released an Italian priest and a Canadian nun “as part of a prisoner exchange with a fee being paid,” an anonymous source told Agence France-Presse. (Canada disputed that allegation.)

According to Terrorism Research & Analysis Consortium, bank robberies also account for $6 million of the group’s wealth.
