Never had any social media until me and the wife decided to make an IG account to share pics of our daughter last year. I was surprised at how some of our friends seemed to be living a lifestyle that they couldn't afford, but were happy to do so as long as it could be shared on social media . Whether it was frequent trips, dinners at fancy restaurants, or outfit pics of their babies in new gear, I couldn't help but think that they wouldn't be doing most of these things if they weren't allowed to shared on IG. Do you guys feel that social media like IG and facebook are causing people to dig themselves into debt in order to keep up with the Jonses? What are your thoughts?

you summed it up in the last statement. keeping up with the jones'. certain types of people always felt the need to show off, social media just gives them another platform. I post stuff here and there, but I could easily go the rest of my life without posting another thing on social media.

social media ends up becoming a microcosm of life. we add people that we are somewhat familiar with, but if we avoid them/aren't really cool with them in real life, the same takes place on social media. i never comment on their posts, end up unfollowing them, etc.

one of my homeboys is OLD fashioned. never had anything but a myspace, and that was to get exposure for his modeling. when all these sites started booming, he said "the people i need to talk to and share stuff with everyday are the people lthat i talk to and share stuff with now". As time goes on, i see his point more and more. it basically keeps you linked with people that you are loosely associated with.

Yes because before social media people never tried to live above their means.

 this thread is ridiculous. Lock this up.

I'm not talking about your typical hood booger working at Finishline trying to show off his newest jays. I'm referring to the non flashy 30 somethings that have kids, careers, and mortgages to pay off.

Living above your means to show off to people shows that you weren't taught how to properly value and use money.

Money is a tool.  If you know how to use it, it will earn you more.  You will as they say "make money using money".

Living above your means for any reason shows short sightedness and an unwillingness or inability to plan for the future.

No one remembers Young QC who off his mom to stunt on the gram? Savage

Instagram is where normal people share squares of their life

and where fools try to prove they're doing it, prove their happy, or gain some sort of acceptance from strangers.

I use IG to post cool food I happen to be enjoying, sneakers I chose to wear that day, or what ever.

Not a big fan of the ppl that try to use IG or any form of social media for that matter to show off or to one up people. das weird.

I mean I get what OP is saying, however, as mentioned, this isn't just because of social media...it's just easier access to see what's going on now because of social media.  Dudes be posting 18 $100 bills with a slick comment but don't mention they about to go pay that to their landlord

Op you hit it right on the money.

I stunt on IG I can't front but it's nothing dealing with materialistic things. Usually thirst traps since since I'm single and hit the gym frequently. Females losing they damn minds over shirtless pictures lol. Acquiring yambs are easy as ever.
