Background:

Car: Mazda 626

Year: 2000

Mileage: 158,000

Repairs: $900 (mainly need the brakes - front and rear - fixed)

BB Value: $2000 at most

The car is in pretty good condition. Really never have problems with this one. It's been good to me. My intention was to drive this car into the ground until it started to give me major problems. But I figured, I'd take this opportunity to kinda think it over and get some opinions.

If I were to purchase a new car (to me; not off-the-lot new), I'm not entirely sure I know what to check for as I haven't really figured what I'd like to budget. It will certainly be an affordable small car, a la a VW Golf or a Mazda 3. Something along those lines. Preferably under $200 per month in car payments.

First time buying a car. What are y'alls thoughts? Shoot me some advice

In the same boat. Need to get the catalyst converter fixed and that would run me about a rack.

Brake work is easy if your not an idiot... But this is NT so..

You can damn near buy a new 00 626 for$900.

If your over 25 stop being a cheap *** and get you some reliable wheels and stop justifying driving a car that's been on the road since the Y2k bug was prevalent.

If you're willing to spend some time to save a lot of money look up videos on YouTube On how to fix it. Brakes are easy to do assuming you have basic tools and can follow directions.

Car Mechanic Simulator 2014 for real taught me how to do extremely basic repairs.

So obviously cars ain't my thing. Let me try to give y'all as much info as I can.

The estimate I got was from Christian Brothers Automotive. I know it's a chain so might me pricey, but I'm new in the city and haven't scouted around.

Labor alone is about $380

For the Brakes

Pad Kit $80

Disc Brake Rotor $151 (75 x 2)

Rear shoes $90

Wheel Cylinder $75 (37 x 2)

Brake System Flush $95

I might look into a DIY project and see if I stand a chance.

Think about it this way

900 now and you never have to pay that again

Or a recurring car note

Find a mom and pop machanics and call it a day.

Front brakes and rotors is a real simple job. Rear drums and shoes I can't speak on since I've never done. Brake system flush I have done but I wouldn't do it again because I always had it in the back of my head that I didn't do it right and my brakes would fail. That's me personally. Honestly you can cut that bill way down if you go to a hood mechanic or any shop that a family or friend recommends to you. Btw what's their labor rate because that's stupid high for brakes.

You willin to pay $900 for some brake work????

Stop bein weak and get your hands dirty. It aint that hard son, its prolly on you tube.

Ill never understad how a man doesnt know how to do basic mechanic work on a vehicle. Even without a father in life. Some men just act like females.

If you do this work yourself, you will save a grip of money. You wont have any choice but to complete your task once you start and it isnt difficult.

If you don't want to change it yourself man then don't do it. If You have money to buy a new car then go for it. U got a 150k miles on this thing man lol

Let it go. Cop a 100k or something

Meh, maybe a bit more of a financial investment to go new, but charge that whip to the game. Put it on cl for 2gs and be upfront with the repairs. It'll feel so good.

Who charges 150 bucks a rotor for a Mazda 626? Go to auto zone get some parts for 200 tops and find someone to put them in if you can't. It takes 20 minutes a wheel though. Just Learn how. If you can take a tire off it's half done. Them all you have to do is take two bolts out of a caliper.

Local mechanics are cheaper than chains, unlicensed/backyard/hood/handy man relative mechanics are the cheapest.

If I were you I would repair it. Any used car at $900 will be old af (and not the good kind of old) or there is something definitely up with that car.

Dude, fyi brakes need to be changed every so often. It doesn't mean you should consider buying a new car. $900 for a brake job on a non-luxury car is INSANE. All you need is front brakes. Go to your nearest auto parts store and purchase rotors and pads. Then go on craigslist and search the automotive services section for someone who does brakes. Why get rid of a car that doesn't have any mechanical (engine, transmission) issues with it. Lastly, don't EVER go back to that shop that quoted you 900.

edit: did a quick search on cost for parts, should run 75ish for parts (2 rotors and pads), then another 50ish should cover labor

Preach on brotha

i cant help but smh at todays youth, quick to take a selfie for attention but have no ****** clue on how to work a hammer or drill. if you know how to turn a wrench clockwise and counter clockwise, you can change brake pads boy. same goes for the homie that needs to change his cat converter.

if either of you two live around seattle, holla at me. ill only charge you half of what your mechanic quoted.

Damn, $900 for a brake job? That's mighty expensive and also $1000 for a catalytic converter...smh these shops are trying to make a killing on labor costs. A brake job isn't hard to do. If anything, find a cheaper place or try to do it yourself. Look up some stuff online to help you along the way. There's loads of youtube videos that can help. Even if you have brake shoes. It's not that tough of a job. Parts shouldn't cost more than $300 tops, depending on what you need.

1. Check craigslist for a mechanic...call 3 or 4 tell them what you need done see who gives you the best price. (Some will come to your place or fix it in a parking lot)

2. http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/home order the parts you need and pick them up in store . they have coupons $50 off $100, $40 off 100 etc just search plus ebates/fatwallet will give you cash back.

3. Save their number for next time.

4. Keep rolling.
