NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Officials are attempting to stop hundreds of ATV riders and dirt bikers who are wreaking havoc on South Florida streets.
City of Miami Police and Miami Beach Police issued BOLO's to the public for the riders who are being disruptive, popping wheelies and speeding through the roads.
According to one rider, the demonstration is meant to celebrate Martin Luther King Day. "We came down here for the Martin Luther King Day celebration, a bunch a guys as far as brothers and my whole neighborhood, mixed races and what not. We tried to get together to do a peaceful ride through the city. Yeah it's a little disruptful to the normal traffic, but we're just trying to have some fun and let them know it's a movement. Bikes up, guns down. No violence at all."
The large group has been seen riding all over Miami-Dade County. Earlier Monday afternoon, they headed westbound on MacArthur Causeway, where Miami Beach Police attempted to shut down the causeway but were unsuccessful.
According to a Miami Police spokesperson, unless a more serious offense occurs, officers will not give chase since the offense is only a traffic violation.
Officials said it is illegal to ride those vehicles on public roadways.
According to Miami Fire Rescue, no accidents or injuries directly related to the riders have occurred at this time.
