Looks like Fox is going the Ultimate Fantastic Four route, especially regarding Reed Richards/Mr Fantastic

 Reed is a child genius  who displayed his curiosity from the day he was born. At the age of 11, following a demonstration of his research on the field of teleportation  at a school science fair, Reed was recruited for a government program which sponsors young geniuses' research. He continued his research at the government research facility located in Manhattan's  Baxter Building. At the age of 21 his research was realized as he and several others attempted to teleport organic material through an alternate plane of existence  called the N-Zone. The experiment went awry giving Reed and several others super powers. His powers enable him to stretch his body parts to incredible lengths and endow him with enhanced durability.

Ultimates was an inspiration based on them being real young but there are plenty of other sources too, they didn't just stick to one book or one universe.

I think they all get powers from it, I think they just updated the exploration piece, instead of space they explore the multi-verse? I wouldn't be surprised if they dealt with the Negative Zone in this one and their journey to it is what changes them. There could still be radiation or other science mumbo-jumbo in the machine they use to travel through universes.


The vid I posted above kind of gives a bit of explanation but overall we still do not know too much about the film really.
