Should Artists Stop With Mixtapes Once They've Established Themselves?

Drake not a good rapper?  lol

I'm not his biggest fan but dude can spit.  Can't dent that.  Def a good rapper.

Wrong. He drops them on iTunes and Amazon and they become singles. He gets paid from radio spins and .99 and $1.49 sales.
im not a drake stan but im sure somebody in this forum can give you a list of over 15 songs that came out by drake in between albums that were free at some point.... i could be wrong but IJS i downloaded many many loosies off of his OVO soundcloud for the free before it became available for sale. **** slim k did a whole mixtape of drake loosies... Kinda like how the weeknd dropped the trilogy for free then it became for sale... only difference is packaging of the songs.

The bar has been set so low due to the southern rappers in the game. You've all been fooled into thinking Drake is actually talented. I liken him to say Nelly or Ja Rule, a mediocre rapper that stumbled into mainstream success. Everyone has their run these days but that in no way makes you a good rapper.

If you compare male duck to true top tier rappers, you'll see he pales in comparison.

Saw Rico Hoods name on the right and knew what it was

To be a top tier rapper, in my opinion, you first have to be good. Drake is not good, therefore making him ineligible for that echelon.

He's popular, no doubt. A lot of sheep out there. But as we all know, the game is cyclical and there's always one wack rapper that rises to the top for a bit and then fades away. Hopefully, Drake will soon be gone and good music can flourish.

Kevin Gates for President. #bwa #idgt

Selling out arenas makes you a top tier rapper wether you think hes lyrical or not, drake been at the top since 09, nelly & ja didnt last that long at the top

Funny you say that considering Big Krit, J Cole and Kevin Gates are 3 of the best rappers in the game. Lyrics, substance and creativity.

Funny you mention those 3 (all better than Drake) but none of them rap like you're typical southern rappers. There raps are patterened after NY rappers.

I'm glad you mentioned Gates though, he's my favorite out right now. #bwa #idgt

Bruh yall trolling.... Krit sounds like pimp c. Nothing east coast bout dude... I don't like cole so no comment. And gates sounds like Louisiana..... Once again nowhere near east coast..... I'm lost at this logic you guys are speaking.

I'm not talking about their voices or accents. I'm talking about the way they rap, the technical aspects, it's straight out the up north playbook.

What's the typical southern rapper though? Sounds like you're letting what's being played on radio fool you. There's nothing NY about Krit or Gates. J Cole does to an extent. The south has always had lyrical dudes. Scarface, the whole Dungeon Family, UGK, T.I. etc. Just cuz somebody can spit that don't mean they're rapping style is NY lol.

What's interesting in the case of KRIT(Return of 4eva) and J Cole (Friday Night Lights), is that their most celebrated releases in their careers have been mix tapes. Both projects helped to spur their fame, but at the same time their albums are always judged in comparison to the tapes. It can be a good and bad thing

I don't consider Pimp C lyrical

Have you heard any of UGK music before he went to jail? Like Too Hard to swallow, or super tight? Even Ridin dirty and dirty money had pure lyrical tracks and stories. It just so happens they are from texas and the way we say and go about explaining things come off different... Pimp gave it to you straight forward, just straight raw rap. If you  lived what he was talking about then you might think he was the hardest dude ever spitting. But i an see how you can come to the pimp aint lyrical conclusion.

If you've heard UGK's albums and still think that I don't know what to tell you.

Being lyrical =/= using Canibus' theasaurus. If you don't think Pimp C is lyrical, then you shouldn't think Scarface is either. And if you don't think Scarface is lyrical, ehhhhhh.......

I think they all should do mixtapes, but late 90's early 2000's style. Drop some rhymes on the hottest beats out so people can hear from you instead of having to wait 2-3 years for another album to drop. We used to look at mixtapes like preseason games. Entertaining but not the real deal. It's different now, tho.

Say what you want about Lil Wayne but he handled the mixtape part of the game better than anybody. Put a lot of heat out there, but didn't waste content.

Nowadays cats are putting out mixtapes with album quality music on it. Save those joints for the album, man.
