I use them as grocery bags since grocery stores don't give out bags anymore. They're pretty sturdy for what I use them for.

a lot of supermarkets outside of NYC charge you for paper bags. And they don't have plastic bags.

Started a few years ago I think, but more stores like 7-11s have adopted this practice. I've seen $0.10 a bag usually.

its because of a state mandated ordinance to encourage people to "go green" and keep/reuse or purchase re-usable bags. you dont see plastic bags much anywhere now out here, as they are terrible for the environment, seeing as they dont biodegrade as quickly/or similarly as paper bags do.
