It wasn't in his nature. After he stopped playing in 1992 He went away for a while, worked with the Celtics, won a NBA Coach of the year with the pacers (Only player to win NBA MVP and Coach of the Year so far), and lead them to 3 consecutive Conference Finals and a Finals in 2000.
Magic on the other hand stayed visible with the '96 Comback and with the Starbucks, Movie Theatres etc etc among many other things. Most kids of this generation know Magic as the "Magic Theatre" guy. Kids in my building was shocked to find out that he used to play basketball and wondered how the hell he won 3 MVP and was a triple double machine despite being african american and unable to jump over a telephone book.
Overall, true basketball savants, junkiies, know Larry Bird really well. 24, 10, and 5 for his career, 3 rings, and an overall laid back dude. Team Sagittarius. Funny thing is even though people loved to bring up race and how a white dude was kicking black dudes **** on the court, he pretty colorblind and chilled with mostly black dudes and said in an interview that he used to get offended when opposing teams would stick a white dude on him.
Oh yeah. passing on the Vinary cw.
Real talk. These days people kinda look past Larry Bird. Dude was bad..Bird, Magic, Isiah, Worthy, Moses Malone, Benard King, The Doctor, Worthy, Mc Hale, The Chief, Jabbar, Alex English, Dantley, Ralph Sampson, Buck Williams, Clyde, Aguirre, Iceman, Hakeem, Jordan....and a slew of others were a MAJOR part of the 70s and 80s era of the NBA. Most of these guys arent even mentioned in NBA talk these days. Dont expect to hear these names unless you was born in the 70s or early 80s. i was born in 75...And my father being a die hard Celtic fan..i use to get tired of hearing about that damn team..only to later appreciate the history behind that team and its players.
