So...I signed on LinkedIn and saw an old coworker. Dude hyphenated his last name to include his wife's. Was talking to a girl about it and apparently its more common than I thought. Anybody else heard of this? Would you change your last name to your wife's?

i wouldnt but I've never understood the significance of a woman taking her husband's name either...

both seem like silly customs to me...got to go through all that extra work of obtaining new IDs and other legal documents, unless theres some legal precedent for it iono

What if her last name was cooler than yours? I think less than 10 people have been able to say my last name correctly. It's not even that difficult, people just don't know how to sound out words anymore.

Historically speaking, women were considered the property of their husband after getting married. They no longer "belonged" to their mother and father, hence the name change.

I do not plan on getting married, therefore no name changing for me.

Crazy to me.....

Jay-Z did it.

Some may be over how much press Beyonce has been getting over the past month, but we can't seem to get enough of it. And because of that, we've decided to give you a little extra look into Beyonce and Jay-z's marriage. For example, did you know that Jay-z actually took Beyonce's last name when the got married in October 2008.

According to Boston.com, Shawn Carter changed to Shawn Knowles-Carter, while Beyonce became Beyonce Knowles-Carter. "They want to keep Knowles because Beyonce's parents didn't have any sons and they're keen to keep the name going strong, especially if they don't produce any children themselves," a source revealed.

What if you both have the same last name?

Smith-Smith or Smith x2?

i believe part of that rationale as well was most of western society being patrilineal & it mattered more who your father was, in that vein the wives took the familial name of the husband...

it is a relatively arbitrary thing...
