Anyone ever change their name?

Today I began the process. Seems pretty simple, at least here in Georiga anyway. Anyone have any experiences with doing a name change? Was it hard getting jobs because you indicated thatvyoubwere previously known by another name?

I'm changing my last name because I don't want to carry it on when I have kids. My dad was a piece of crap, and I have no ties to his side of my family. I've always been with my mom. I'm part of our family, and not his. So when the day comes for me to have little ones, I want them to carry on the name of the only family I've ever known. Is this a silly reason?

Sidebar, a buddy of mines just pointed out that I'll have three first names (first middle and last are all typical first names)

Far from a silly reason bro far from it.

I've thought about doing it before because I'm a twin and our names are so similar that it's problematic at times

Im going to for a similar reason as well. But my primary reason is my name is too African fro the west. From what I hear that actually increases your chance of employment but IDK from experience. Tho I am guessing you dont have an african name so it shouldnt increase your chance but it shouldnt hurt.

Hope that answers your question OP

I wouldn't call it a silly reason cause this is something you felt you had to do.

I will say that I don't fully agree with your POV.
Us minorities been having ****** fathers for centuries.
Good or bad it's still ignoring a whole half of where you come from...

Just my opinion though.

I just don't see the purpose in honoring my dad by passing on the name.

I actually think I hear people doing this for the same reasons.

I think changing your name is fine. I mean some parents are just stupid naming their kids all these damn names that don't make sense. I am all about being original but don't try and be creative on your kids behalf knowing he's going to have years and years of torment cause you decided to make up some stupid name.

Raekwon might get a pass but name your son Ghostface? I am cool of that.

Almost changed my last name for similar reasons OP but my mom never changed her last name after her and my dad divorced, plus my last name would end up being different from my brother and nephew's, can't have that.

I changed my last name back in 07. It was for a similar reason. It wasn't too difficult when I did it in NY. More tedious than anything. Had to go through court and then get it published in a newspaper. Getting a new birth certificate was a pain but that was it. I didn't have any trouble getting my security clearance when I joined the military. You should be straight blink.

You have to get a new birth certificate? ****.... that is going to be damn near impossible for me to do with how **** Nigeria is. I had a hard time getting the hospital to reissue my first certificate.

As a guy with an African name myself, don't do it for that reason man. That's shameful

had a student at my old school I worked for...

mom named him DeZign :smh:

kid was nerdy as hell and not able to carry a name like that, felt bad for him

Its a pretty common practice. I'd say about 50% of Africans I met have an "English" name and an African name. Statistics show that Jon is a better name on a resume than Jose if you want a call back.

I still have other reasons besides that

Also its not like I am changing my name to a white name. Id be changing the spelling of my first name to be spelled phoenetically and using my middle name as my last name (because I too dont want to carry my family's name but want to keep the one my mom gave me).

The name just isn't significant to me, and when I think of family, I don't consider it as a name I would want to pass on. My mother's family is the only family I've ever had/known. I believe I've shared some details about my dad here on NT before. He was more than just the average dead beat, the guy was a murderer. So in addition to me not identifying with the name or feeling a connection to it, I damb sure don't want to carry on one that's tarnished with a scumbag.

OP- I did the exact same thing. I legally changed my last name before I graduated college so that my mom and grandma's last name would be on my diploma. My dad bailed when I was in middle school and I had grown up on my mom's side of the family anyway. I felt it was only right that I carry my FAMILY name into my adult life. It wasn't hard at all to get a job because you're issued a SSN card and other legal documents. It's just a very lengthy process because you have to run an announcement in the news paper for a month or so.
