I think I have decided I want D'Angelo Russell on the Sixers
League executive: Word is Sixers want D'Angelo Russell

The thought around the NBA is that the 76ers hope to select D'Angelo Russell in the NBA draft, according to a league executive.

"He's the guy they want," the executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Saturday. "That's the word around the league. You know the Sixers. They won't come out and say it [publicly]. But he's the guy they want."

The executive added the franchise might have to nab one of the top two selections at the draft lottery on May 19 to get the former Ohio State combo guard.

The Sixers are guaranteed a top-six pick in the June 25 draft after finishing with the league's third-worst record (18-64) this season. They have a 15.6 percent chance to get the top pick.

The executive views former Kentucky center/power forward Karl-Anthony Towns and Russell as the top two draft prospects, ahead of point guard Emmanuel Mudiay and Duke center Jahlil Okafor. Mudiay played this season for the Guangdong Southern Tigers of the Chinese Basketball Association.

"Russell has star quality," he said of the 6-foot-5, 180-pounder.

Russell averaged 19.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 5.0 assists while shooting 41.1 percent on three-pointers last season en route to being named a first-team all-American and Big Ten freshman of the year.

Five Sixers executives, including general manager Sam Hinkie, were on hand when the Louisville native finished with 23 points, 11 assists, and 11 rebounds in a 79-60 victory at Rutgers in February.

He made 8 of 13 shots, and had one steal and two turnovers in 35 minutes while handling the ball most of the game. A source said the Sixers were impressed by his performance.

It's not surprising that they would want Russell.

A league scout and the executive believe he's more NBA-ready than Mudiay. The 6-6, 205-pounder struggles shooting from the outside. Mudiay would be a gamble, considering he only played in 12 games in China because of an ankle injury. He averaged 18.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.6 steals in what some have called a subpar league.

And unless the Sixers are secretly unhappy with Nerlens Noel or Joel Embiid, they don't need to acquire a center for a third straight draft. Plus, they desperately need a lead guard who can shoot from outside, and Russell can definitely do that.

How's Saric looking btw? I COMPLETELY FORGOT the 6ers had him

Apparently he might not be coming next season

If Russell wows in the workouts, I'd consider him #1. At this point, I still can't NOT go with Towns if have the #1 pick. As crazy as it sounds I'd roll with three centers because I still need to see Embiid healthy

yeah i think Towns is the consensus #1

crazy potential on both ends of the floor

If the Sixers land the first pick...you don't just outright draft Russell. You move down a pick or 2 and acquire additional assets.

True, but it would hilarious if 6ers got the #1 pick, traded down to #3 and then the #2 team drafted Russell

I wonder how much realistically they could get from trading down a pick or two

So the Sixers might not go BPA?

That article might have answered those questions I posed a few pages ago.

That's what I was thinking too. If they're REALLY set on drafting a PG and don't believe there's a major difference between KAT and the top guys...best thing is to try and use intel to project which guys might not be available at certain selections. Use that as a basis to slot a move down and gain more capital.

They did that last year w/ Orlando.

But I think once all these dudes go through the draft process...we'll get a much clearer picture as to what the Sixers are willing to do.

Word...gotta be careful about taking these things at face value. When philly.com is the source, you can't ignore the chance of a smokescreen.

Fun to speculate though.

I love Russell on the Sixers.

I'd trade Wroten and over pay for Middleton.

Russell
Middleton
Covington
Nerlens
Embiid

That's a nice young squad, 3 shooters, two ball handlers, 2 rim protectors and great size at every position.

Reminder of how the NBA Draft Lottery's conducted:

- The actual lottery takes place in a conference room on the night of the draft lottery, prior to what we see on TV being pulled out of the envelopes

- In that conference room: one representative from each of the 14 lottery teams, NBA executives, officials from the accounting firm Ernst & Young (firm the NBA uses for official tabulation of many of the league's mathematical needs), and four members of the national media

- Once inside that conference room: no phones, no internet and no tweeting

- Process: 14 ping pong balls, each marked 1-14, will be dropped inside the lottery machine. Four balls will then be randomly drawn to create a four-digit combination. The team that has the worst record, this year's Timberwolves, has been assigned the most four-ball combinations, giving them the best chance to win (250 of the possible 1,000 combinations). Once the numbers are drawn, that four-digit number is now matched to the board to see which team has the No. 1 pick. The process is then repeated for the second & third picks.

Oh, and I'll always be pessimistic about Minnesota's lottery luck considering ESPN couldn't even get our logo right on the graphic when we had the second-best chances of landing No. 1 in 2010. :smh:
