The 2015 NBA Draft Thread: Draft Day Is Here

That's a good point.

The more you play, the more people pick your game apart before the draft.

BUT.... for example Dekker/Big Frank certainly would NOT be drafted after their freshman years

They were guys who weren't on NBA radars coming into college, though. Completely different caliber of prospects at the point that they arrived in Madison.

Went from likely lottery pick to second round pick to out of the league.

I think he probably regrets returning to school.

Tony was ridiculously immature coming out of HS, so wouldn't that happen if he went straight pro?

The same happens IMO

He'd have gotten paid tho, and most certainly blew it all by now.

Frank late bloomer so no.

Dekkar yes. Dude was a top 20 HS recruit, played extremely well as a freshman.

just for argument's sake, if college doesn't prepare you or make you better, why were guys in the past staying for 1-3 years before going pro?

1. Tradition, expectation.

2. Kids played way way less games in the past. they didn't do AAU, HS, camps, Team USA. So you could have argued they needed to learn how to playe period. Not the case now, guys come in with 100 plus games of organized basketball.

It's really not that complicated, it's business. These kids have X amount of years of earning they can accomplish playing a game. Why do it for free?? I think D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera is crazy for thinking he can make the NBA (he truly believes it) but he won't be crazy when he's making 100K+ next year in Europe when it'd be $0 at Georgetown. (And the idea of overseas ball is overrated by many, it's not that glamorous but these kids that are on the fringe can do very well over there).

Would Dekker had been considered a sure fire first-rounder?

No.

I'll keep saying this...

Nobody forces a GM to draft a freshman that "isn't ready".

If some GM drafts Myles Turner over Frank Kaminsky in May...who's "hurting the NBA"...the kid or the NBA GM himself?

Guarantee money is everything.

yup. all the analytic models loved him. someone would taken him.

2 views of this.

As a fan it hurts the nba.

If I was them I would dip as soon as I told I was a first round lock.

How do you figure it hurts the NBA?

Most of the one and done guys are super elite freshman, and they kick out of the league replacement level players.

Don't you think Devin Booker is going to be better than Garrett temple for example (replacment level). The talent level of league improves with these freshman.

GMs draft on potential 9 out of 10.

All very valid points.

The original point was does college "prepare" you for the NBA?

I think that's an obvious yes.

I actually thought D'Antoni was going to turn Harris into something worthwhile.

Prove it.

Guys are better because they are older not because they played more college bball.

The sports are completely different.

The defensive and offensive strategies are COMPLETELY different. There are restrictions on one on one time with coaches.

You here some college coaches who still teach straight up straight down shoulders square jump shooting which no good NBA shooting coach does.

NBA need to open the doors for HS kids again...especially with teams utilizing the d league the way they're suppose to

I'll reiterate, 1-yr in college is perfect.

I think your missing the bigger picture. "Maturity" isn't consistent throughout players. Some players need the structure of a college program before the NBA just like some players THRIVE is a stricter environment(coach) rather than having a players coach.

Darius Miles. DUMB talent/potential

He wouldn't have benefited from being with Coach Cal, Coach K, Coach Izzo for a year?

I think so.

Said this a week ago in regards to staying in college vs leaving early:

Typically the reasons a player will come back to school and improve they're stock is that they've JUST burst onto the scene, suffered an injury, or some type of suspension.

This is when it is recommended to spend abother year in college. Not to improve as a player...but to improve your stock since you weren't properly evaluated for the aforementioned reasons.

James Mcadoo could have been a top 10 pick if he came out after his freshman year. He stayed til he was a senior and was undrafted.

There is no real benefit to staying in school when you're stock is at its apex. It's like getting offered a $80k job right out of college, and you turn that down to take an internship.

Get your $$

Darius miles is a bama with 62 million dollars. I think coming out of HS worked out for him.

You guys been to college? Becuase guys are ascribing a ton of magic to a year of college. I know plenty of immature dummies who went to college for a year and were still immature dummies.

should adopt a minor league system like baseball. wanna come out of high school fine, spend at least half a year in the d-league first. for every elite talent there's a bunch of guys that do nothing for 3 years just toiling on a bench somewhere.
