Walmart To Raise Minimum Wage

"Walmart has a long and storied (and well-earned) reputation for shortchanging its employees. That may change slightly following the corporate behemoth’s announcement this morning that it will be raising the pay of about half a million of its employees.

The new rate increase will raise hourly pay for employees to $9 as of April. Walmart says it also plans a second increase that will ensure all associates will be making $10 by next February.

We’re also strengthening our department manager roles and will raise the starting wage for some of these positions to at least $13 an hour this summer and at least $15 an hour early next year.

Not only does this potentially alter Walmart’s image as one of the most egregious examples of corporate greed – it may have a big impact on the ongoing national conversation around raising the minimum wage.

The estimated cost of the pay raises and other changes announced today hovers somewhere around $1 billion dollars for the fiscal year"

IMO, minimum wage should've been like $10 10 years ago, and this is only a sign of the huge profits they're making, but I guess it's a small victory for folks. We'll see if they raise prices, seeing that seems to be the biggest excuse from the opposition when it comes to increasing minimum wage.

im scared to go to walmart its like a jungle out there bruh.

I don't even have a walmart in my city. I only been to one once and bought a hoodie.

They are still going to limit the amount of hours that people work and keep it under 20 per week so they don't have to provide them any insurance or anything. Nothing but a publicity stunt. Their shelves are still understocked. I refuse to purchase anything there.

Here in cali 9 is minium already another reason cali> and i heard they alrrady raised it to 10

Still won't shop there. Good for the workers though.

Definitely a pr thing to boost their image but I can't say fersure that they'll keep folks at/under 20 hours. Full time for them is like 34 hours I believe.

That won't change anything here. The minimum wage here is already well above $9.

I'm classy, so I shop at Target but this is pretty accurate with how the few Wal-Mart's I've been to have been. 300 employee's BS'in on the floor and they only have two registers open. :smh:

Don't forget that the cost to produce products in China has increased substantially over the past 3 years.

I've always found it funny though that Walmart is the whipping boy for "Corporate Greed" when Amazon actually pays their stock people less than Walmart. Not to mention Apple makes more per employee than any other corporation in the world. Why doesn't anyone complain about them? Last I heard, they pay Apple store employees something like $11-12/hr.

I don't even shop at Walmart anyway. If they wanted me as a customer, they'd start selling degrees and put an in-store university in the franchise store near where I live. That way I could truly save more and live better.

What has Walmart done to not be the public whipping boy though?

Apple makes that much per employee because they have ridiculous successful products. Valve makes a crazy amount per employee, they claim even more than apple, but that once again is a result a crazy successful product.

Mentioning at store employee makes no sense to me, how saying that Apple pays their employees $3-4 more, for a similar job in better work conditions help your case?

And I agree that Amazon has a lot of scumbag practices. But the company goes out of their way take care of their customers. So at least the have done some things to foster some good will.

What has Walmart done really?

-Anyway, I dunno why anyone would waste a vowel defending a company like Walmart. You argument sounds like when a student gets called out for talking in class and they respond "other people were talking too". Yeah, umm, so what?

Wal Mart gives people jobs and provides goods for people.  It helps the economy and society.  If working conditions are really that terrible, then why are they flourishing?

This would be great....if they don't also cut hours.

I got an aunt who is a dept or floor manager there. She busts her *** all the time and because she's older and has little education this is the only thing for her. I'd want this just for her.
