Some post offices won't take the reshaped flat rate box, saying it was altered. Happened to me a few times.

You're right, it depends how much of a d*** your PO is. I haven't gotten anything back for altered boxes, but I have received items back in a flat rate box using regular postage (I even wrapped the box like a perfect xmas gift to cover the flat rate print on the box, but they can tell by the shape I suppose).

Im talking plain box priority shipping not the flat rate priority boxes.
But moral of the story go pay online and its way cheaper.

Throw it in the Bin with the other box and I'm Out!
The clerk doesn't even see the Altered Box!
once it's in the Bin.. and the Labels are correct n paid

I throw all my packages in the bin overnight. Still got caught twice for using a perfectly wrapped flat rate box and haven't done it again since. But the altered ones are fine because I'm still paying the flat rate postage. From the money saved by purchasing postage online, just get a cheap $15-20 scale and weigh everything at home.

I'm saying to save time at home and on PayPal without having to use a credit card. So I just guess and it's not accurate lol
