Man lyrically Andre is way better than Run, and DMC combined.

Big Boi has an above average flow as well; we can relate more to Outkast due to being somewhat modern.  Man I wasn't even in school when Run DMC started, and by they time they dropped that King album I was only nine or so. That was trash by the way.

ATLiens >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Run DMC's best album.

Aquemini is the best album to come from any southern hip hop act to date.

Listening to Outkast right now feels fresh, just look at their discography with three classics. You listen to Run DMC and feel essence of the crack era...the real crack era, not just an artist from the 90s reciting some tales. Boom, bap, echo flow, 5 sentence verses, just not the type of quality you'll get from an Outkast album.

Run DMC was overrated imo. I like the Geto Boys, and some of NWA, Tribe, and some artists who came at the end of the 80s-early 90s.

But I never liked Run DMC. As a collective, the flow was weak, and the beats were mad simple. Honestly, I like the Beastie Boys more so than Run DMC.

The Love Below is a masterpiece, and I agree that Andre has a lot of clones running around today.

If we're talking trios then De La>
It's a draw with them, Tribe and Beastie Boys.

I'm still not sure how Outkast is more influential than the first hip hop group to expose the world to the culture on a massive, international scale. If you are a hip hop fan of a certain age, regardless of region, you were a Run DMC fan. Period.

Yeah I'm a way bigger fan of Outkast but Run DMC was way more influential to the history of hip hop.... no contest

Shout out to KMD.

What a niggy know?

...and man, I just can't bring myself to say Run DMC was more influential than Outkast - it's probably my age though.

When they were crackin' I was like 7 - no way in hell I could gauge the magnitude of what they were doing/did...

I was born in '90 so I get where you're coming from but at the same time you gotta realize that they made hip-hop a mainstream genre singlehandedly and literally nobody had an impact for the genre like they did.

AQUEMINI >>>>
as far influence , that depends on who you ask

no andre 3000 and rap would look alot different today ..it seems he had a big musical influence on kendrick lamar , childish gambino , kid cudi, drake , kanye west , B.O.B , Future , big krit ,Future , Lil Wayne etc

RUN DMC pioneered the rock x rap sound that you could say are somewhat responsible for linkin park , the beastie boys , rage against the machine etc

Your last question lacks logic. Do you think Run DMC influenced Cali cats more than Snoop and Dre? You do understand that it goes both ways, right?

Still waiting to hear from you how Outkast was/is a regional phenomenon, btw.

No, my last question was a rhetorical question of how influence can be different and based on the person or region.

Gipp was in Dungeon Family. Gipp is from the south. Of course Outkast would be more influential to him. Outkast wasn't influential to New York or New York rap, because New York had Tribe, De La, Jungle Brothers.... Did you forget the 95' Source Awards? People in New York listened to Outkast, that doesn't mean they were influential, because they always sort of had their own lane.

Rap wouldn't be what it is now, because of Run DMC...period. Run DMC isn't my favorite group. Run DMC isn't the most lyrical group. But to negate what they did for the culture shows you have no knowledge of it.

It doesn't matter if you don't like Michael Jordan because you were a Detroit fan, basketball is partially what it is because of Jordan. It would be disrespectful to talk about modern day basketball without talking about Magic, Bird or Jordan.

People are basing this topic on who they like better or who they listened to as if they have no clue what influential means, because they don't. Most people have no clue what Run DMC did.

When young people do that it's disgraceful, because it's how our culture gets rewritten or whitewashed. It's like a 14 year old saying Drake is better than Nas, why, because Drake is what they currently know.

That's why I always say rap fans are stupid. There is a lack of knowledge and ignorance to the history. Nobody listens to what came before them. But someone in to rock will listen to Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin and the Rolling Stones and treat them with reverence. Rap fans, are just ****** stupid.

QFT.

Also, a lyrical comparison is not really fair. Run DMC was very advanced lyrically for their time. If y'all are gonna compare the lyricism you have to take the time period into account.

Another thing to consider about Run DMC is not only what they did, but when they did it. They're accomplishments came at a time when there was no "Where Hip Hop Lives" type stations, no Rap City, no MTV Raps etc. Without any of those outlets they still did rediculous numbers, worldwide tours and major endorsements at a time when the average person didn't consider rap as real music.

Let's not forget the fashion. So many ppl now a days wear things they popularized 30 years ago without even realizing where it originated ( Shell Toes, Cazals with no lenses, track suits, Kangol buckets, rope chains etc)

I'm a huge fan of Kast but this comparison ain't even close.

See there we go, gimme some historical context so I can get a better grasp of their actual accomplishments...

Man...

Not one dude in here is playing Run DMC, and it's cool to keep history in perspective, but you know Outkast makes doper music.

Really, just how short was their reign on top? If Run DMC was so hot how come time passed them by so quick, and people latched on to Rakim, KRS, and so many other artists from that era?

Because they didn't make dope music. They're somewhat praised because they shifted the sound from largely sampling, but everything else in comparison to Outkast is...

I also feel like LL is more legendary than Run DMC. Where LL has lasted for decades, and is currently putting out material.

Run DMC did the rock thing, but Outkast also put the live band into hip hop, that soulful ****.

Spottieottiedopaliscious >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Walk This Way

I mean if we're going off the history angle, then everyone should have Dr. J over Michael Jordan for the way he revolutionized basketball. He become a player that many wanted to pattern their game after.

But if you ask who is better between Dr. J and Jordan, most people will end up telling you Mike.

Dre's flow changed the way a lot of rappers do it now. This is also the case with him now being very inconsistent. Although I can say Dre and Big Boi were never complacent on the mic.

Not one artist today is patterning their style off of Run DMC. Their legacy doesn't compare to what Outkast left behind in terms of the actual music.

I'm talking musically over everything else, and Outkast wins it with no contest.

Couldn't have said it any better, especially that last sentence. Respect and praise to what Run-DMC did for the genre being one of the trailblazers for rap/hip hop. I'm a bare bones beats and rhymes dude when it comes to rap, so with me it's Outkast > Run DMC
