How can Outkast be more influential when they don't even have a "Legacy" portion on their wiki page?

Man...

Not one dude in here is playing Run DMC, and it's cool to keep history in perspective, but you know Outkast makes doper music.

Really, just how short was their reign on top? If Run DMC was so hot how come time passed them by so quick, and people latched on to Rakim, KRS, and so many other artists from that era?

Because they didn't make dope music. They're somewhat praised because they shifted the sound from largely sampling, but everything else in comparison to Outkast is...:x

I also feel like LL is more legendary than Run DMC. Where LL has lasted for decades, and is currently putting out material.

Run DMC did the rock thing, but Outkast also put the live band into hip hop, that soulful ****.

Spottieottiedopaliscious >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Walk This Way

I mean if we're going off the history angle, then everyone should have Dr. J over Michael Jordan for the way he revolutionized basketball. He become a player that many wanted to pattern their game after.

But if you ask who is better between Dr. J and Jordan, most people will end up telling you Mike.

Dre's flow changed the way a lot of rappers do it now. This is also the case with him now being very inconsistent. Although I can say Dre and Big Boi were never complacent on the mic.

Not one artist today is patterning their style off of Run DMC. Their legacy doesn't compare to what Outkast left behind in terms of the actual music.

I'm talking musically over everything else, and Outkast wins it with no contest.

You really gotta speak for yourself as to who still plays them. Sucka MC's, Peter Piper etc still get heavy burn.

And how long was their reign, they had a 10 year career, impressive for any rapper let alone ones who debuted in the early 80's.

And it really is unfair to bring up Rakim. Not too many pre-Ra acts had a career once he came on the scene. He shifted the landscape more than anyone before or after him.

Live band? We gonna act like The Roots don't exist?

And why would anyone pattern their style on a 30 year old style. Same reason car makers don't pattern cars after the Model T, we've evolved, still doesn't take away what that car meant to the industry or the world.

And no one is saying that Run DMC is better than Kast or that they made better music. No matter what side of the argument you're on we can mostly all agree Outkast are way better rappers. But to deny Run DMC's influence is just ignorant. They pretty much introduced Hip Hop to the world!

Outkast influenced an entire region, Run DMC influenced the entire genre and then some.

Your last question lacks logic. Do you think Run DMC influenced Cali cats more than Snoop and Dre? You do understand that it goes both ways, right?

Still waiting to hear from you how Outkast was/is a regional phenomenon, btw.

No, my last question was a rhetorical question of how influence can be different and based on the person or region.

Gipp was in Dungeon Family. Gipp is from the south. Of course Outkast would be more influential to him. Outkast wasn't influential to New York or New York rap, because New York had Tribe, De La, Jungle Brothers.... Did you forget the 95' Source Awards? People in New York listened to Outkast, that doesn't mean they were influential, because they always sort of had their own lane.

Rap wouldn't be what it is now, because of Run DMC...period. Run DMC isn't my favorite group. Run DMC isn't the most lyrical group. But to negate what they did for the culture shows you have no knowledge of it.

It doesn't matter if you don't like Michael Jordan because you were a Detroit fan, basketball is partially what it is because of Jordan. It would be disrespectful to talk about modern day basketball without talking about Magic, Bird or Jordan.

People are basing this topic on who they like better or who they listened to as if they have no clue what influential means, because they don't. Most people have no clue what Run DMC did.

When young people do that it's disgraceful, because it's how our culture gets rewritten or whitewashed. It's like a 14 year old saying Drake is better than Nas, why, because Drake is what they currently know.

That's why I always say rap fans are stupid. There is a lack of knowledge and ignorance to the history. Nobody listens to what came before them. But someone in to rock will listen to Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin and the Rolling Stones and treat them with reverence. Rap fans, are just ****** stupid.

I

100% Truth.

Outkast put the live band in hip hop

Stetsasonic?

If Chuck Berry was so hot, how come everyone talks about Elvis :smh:

Like I said, rap fans are stupid

You younger kids have no respect for the history, so nobody else respects it or our culture. I hate to see where rap/hip hop are headed to in 20 years.

Even after Stetsa, The Roots were doing the live band, VERY WELL, before Outkast.

OutKast is the better group but Run DMC was more influential

People talking about Outkast makes better music seem to be losing sight of what this thread is about, which this guys seems to understand.

Another note....right now, the hottest radio format is.....classic Hip Hop.

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/classic-hip-hop-format-rescuing-radio-stations-20141228
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/16/b...-hop-is-spreading-on-the-radio-dial.html?_r=0

So the idea that there isn't an audience or an appreciation for artists like Run DMC right now is also misguided I would say.

Without run-DMC
There would be no outkast
I don't care what anybody says
Oh and their last good album was aquemini
Everything else has been trash
I know this ain't popular opinion but I don't care
Yall people getting beside yall selves
This the exact reason hip hop is where it is now
We always throwing the ones who helped build it to the way side
Even dre and big boi would say they can't even be put in the same category
I swear man yall new generations suck *** when it comes to rap

Run DMC in terms of being influential

OutKast in terms of what i like to hear

dont even know how dudes can say outkast

@nawghtyhare   and @Magic1978  both said it perfectly. while i like OutKasts's music more...what Run DMC was able to do in a time where rap had no big outlets is a big deal. no denying what they id and if you took that away from them OutKast would most likely not have been a thing as well as the genre of hip-hop. no contest

Kast is the GOAT group.

I respect al others, but Outkast imo is it.

Run DMC is like, the Bill Russel of hip hop groups.

Outkast is the MJ. They got the numbers, and the hits.

But there wouldn't be an Outkast without RunDMC

I'm 40+ and all I can say is you can't be serious. Are you guys serious with this? RUN DMC by a country mile and I'm from the south and love Kast, but Run DMC?!?! More influential than Run DMC?
Pioneers bruh. In every sense of the word.

And while I'm at it

Tribe Called Quest>>>>OutKast.

Yeah, I said it.

I can't believe how much Run DMC's impact on hip-hop is being so undermined by some of you. They're the reason why we have hip-hop radio stations, they're the reason why the genre started to get taken seriously by naysayers, they're the reason why some of our favorite rap acts even rap.
And I still listen to them, whoever said nobody in this thread does. I'm 25 fwiw. And I do prefer Outkast musically, but that's not what this is about.

Oh, and The Roots didn't have that soul **** like Outkast.

Aquemini changed the game.

There's not one album by Run DMC that measures up. It all comes down to the music with me.

Run DMC had the "machine" behind them. Just so happen to be the biggest group, on Hip Hops marquee label...

I honestly believe what mele mell did (one of the GOATs btw) with grandmaster flash and the furious 5 opened up the floodgates for hip hop. He birthed so much into the game. As a group, Run DMC had great marketing. The group Whodini had a better body of work, in my opinion.

Now, 'Kast is my favorite group (Tribe, Geto Boys, Goodie Mobb, Wu all situated as well)

The Roots are a favorite too (But, Black Thought pretty much is the sole musician, so, it's difficult to categorize them (Kind of like Melle Mel's situation))

Outkast dropped 5 CLASSIC albums in a row, starting when they were 18 years old. Unreal. Speaking about outkast is like Michael Jordan, when he says his older brother Larry Jordan was better. Hell, Mike said he chose the #23 because he was only half as good as his brother, who wore the #45 (that MJ wore for that short span)

That's how good Outkast is. They excelled in every facet. Creativity, lyricism, content, cross over appeal, sound, fashion, performance/stage presence, album sales (from a pre-piracy/downloading era), Outkast is in a league of their own. I love Run DMC, Russ, Rev, JMJ, etc. but even in it's infancy state in the 80s, there were a lot of great group acts in the mid-late 80s, early 90s. Outkast was clearly the best of their timespace, from 1994 and beyond

I am an Outkast fan, as in easily one of my 5 favorite groups, but some of the **** being said in here supporting them is preposterous.

Son is short circuiting right now

And people still seem to not understand what this thread is actually about.

This is probably one of the dumbest opinions I've ever read on here.

Man you ain't moving me at all.

Outkast will forever be better than Run DMC in my eyes. There's nothing a dude can say to change that.

Outkast >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Run DMC
