I went to get rid of my high cable bill, what are my alternatives?

I`m paying 44 bucks for 50mbs, when that ends it will go up to 60, I plan on getting them to lower the price again, then hopefully come next yr some time Google fiber begins their roll out since my city was confirmed.

Some of you guys are better than me. I can't see myself parting with my cable. My TV is on all the time, even if I'm not watching.

I just cut Direct TV I was paying 130 a month

Sling TV is giving free Roku if you pay 3 months upfront (60 bucks) and then 20 a month... SLING TV IS AMAZING
Got coworkers Hulu and Netflix account...FREEEEE
Got a free antenna for local channels FREEEEE
Set up Plex Media Server to download anything I want to watch in general movies/stream music/ tv shows FREEEEE

Sling is the winner for streaming TV especially sports... ESPN ESPN2 AMC CNN TNT
When baseball season starts I may do 20 bucks for that
I'll have everything i want for 40 a month

I could care less about DVR cause I can watch what I want whenever I want with a 300MBPS connection

I have the same issue, it's like wanting company around. I'm use to the background noise which my girl doesn't understand. Besides that, I also just like to privilege of channel surfing instead just looking for content to load.

going to PM you

what I like about DVR is I tend to forget what shows i line up to watch so it's good having it

I just got an apple tv thing. Will that cut the bill down? What exactly is good about apple tv?

Im close to cutting the cord, too. Gonna give Sling TV a run and see how it goes. Damn shame I pay $150 monthly as a CenturyLink employee!!!

Obviously u can use it as a netflix player. You can also stream a lot of stuff to it.

If u have movie box or showbox both of those can be streamed meaning u basically have the best of ON-Demand content at all times.

Y'all cord cutting dudes never gonna learn with recommending those unauthorized streaming sites.

Meth already put out a warning in the last thread. He gonna lock this up
It's often the same people, too.  LEARN.

We do NOT want people abusing our community to facilitate criminal activity.  That should be obvious and the reasoning self-explanatory.

Stop talking about porn in your "attractive female" threads.  Stop talking about piracy in your media threads.  Violators will be banned, if not for the blatant rule violations then for sheer stupidity.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if some of you have the words "1. Inhale.  2. Exhale.  3. Repeat" tattooed on the backs of your hands to prevent suffocation.

You can lock or delete this thread if need be. Piracy wasnt asked for just alternatives to comcast. Several great answers were provided by great members and I appreciate NT for that. The reason we all consider each other fam.

Im going to call today. Now that hbo now is coming out. Everything is complete

call your company, ask for an account specialist and threaten to cancel it.

 I hate when people say this.

Almost as bad as when people are constantly threatening to sue.

Aint nobody gonna do all that for a $5 credit on next months bill.

the idea is that comcast is selling packages for way more than they are worth. there are a lot of people out there who are getting a good price for tv x internet. typically asking to repackage your services can work, esp if u land a decent rep, or saying you got a good offer from fios...theyll offer up something that way. there is a guide on this somewhere on the internet i think

comcast is one of the worst companies in existence. the fact that they don't offer anything between what...25Mb and 100Mb is absurd. i have optimum in nj for just internet and i pay close to $50 for 55Mb. by far the best internet deal i've ever come across.

sling is an interesting option because basketball on TNT is something i'd like to have. i use ESPN via xbox live.

in total i'd be solid with :

Netflix
TNT for basketball
ESPN for basketball and some other stuff
HBO

thats it. I have an HD antenna that i use to get FOX, ABC, and CBS for weekend basketball and football, and if i want to catch brooklyn 99 or something.

with sling the cost i guess would be..

Netflix $8/month (idk new price)
Sling $20/month
HBONow $15/month

$43.

plus internet $ ?? / month. biggest factor.

if you can get 50Mb for around 50 cash...thats a little under $100.

Now I KNOW comcast can slide you a package for that kind of money. and if so, the hassle of fragmenting service to cut cable is just that...a hassle. so it depends i guess :nerd:

If this starts hitting more cities we should see cable companies getting more competitive with their prices. For $130 a month you could get crazy fast internet, cloud storage, and a ton of channels.

Edit: forgot to add the link

https://fiber.google.com/cities/austin/

For $70 a month you could get your internet, add netflix for $8, Hulu for $8, sling for $20, and HBO for $15. That's $116 total and you're not missing out on much. Maybe cop an HD antenna for $50-$60 to get live network channels, but at that point it's probably better to just do the $130 plan

Did a sling TV trial the other day for my parents. They're wanting to cut their bill down, but sling just doesn't offer the channels my dad watches. When he gets off work he pretty much just watches velocity and discovery for car shows and sling doesn't offer any packages with it.

Just read that hbo now is exclusive to apple devices for the first three months and will cost $14.99. That's expensive but I think the first month is free if you sign up through an apple device. Can only stream to apple tv, so my chromecast would be useless.

Most covered the basics. Couple things..

1.) you DONT need a $50 + antenna to get good HD signals. Its a waste of money unless you're buying something to MOUNT outside. Buy the CHEAPEST one you can find that does both UHF/VHF signals. I use the $8 antenna from Radio shack and it works WAYYYYY better than my neighbors who spent $40 on their "leaf" type antenna. Sure it doesn't look as good, but I'd rather have better reception than looks.

*** This is all depending on where you live. I live in the city so my signal is a lot higher than most.

You need an antenna that does BOTH because someone like ABC will only use VHF and CBS only uses UHF etc...

2.) Comcast is currently running $30 a month for 25MB p/s for a whole year. Buy your own modem and thats all you pay. At the end of the year threaten to cancel unless they give you the same deal.

3.) The idea of calling an "account specialist" is 100% right. These companies are NOT gonna "help" you unless you threaten or have leverage. I personally ask for "RETENTION DEPT." They WILL work with you if you're out of contract and are free to leave. TELL THEM what you want and have them figure out a package that fits you.

4.) Comcast ALSO offers internet tv now. Go to xfinity.com. I believe its $50 a month for around the same channels as sling plus HBO.
