NYC 1981 vol. Hell on Earth..What a horrible time this was

While the drugs and crime can be left back in that era it did bring about some interesting characters and movements. Self-expression was at an all time high. Would've like to witness that in particular but I came around the end of the 80s.

Yeah, bring back crack and broken families due to prison, death, and severe poverty....

Pretty much this.

I don't think anyone is calling for bringing all that **** back. Just appreciating a great era in NYC.

Bunch of contrarians for the sake of being contrarians in here.

Man you can save that era. Instead of making stories in the era we're given, people look back to yesteryears and wish.

Put that work in with what God gave you. Nah mean.

Realness. Repped.

I'm saying tho.

These rose-tinted nostalgia goggles never did anyone good
The two aren't mutually exclusive guys. You can appreciate the past while building in the current.

Understandable but OP literally opened this thread with a documentary about murders being through the roof in 1981 NY while simultaneously reminiscing on how young men used to sell illegal and dangerous drugs, and literally described the area as a filthy hive.

And called it the classic era. He wasn't talmbout no expression or rooftop parties.

I guess I expressed my point in the wrong way

Hearing about that era is appreciated
Living in that era, maybe not so much

This era definitely isn't appreciated though
Gentrification and transplants

I seent people were mad that white folks were taking pics at the Big L mural. Why is this a bad thing?

Could be because they're white
Could be because they might not even be aware of Big Ls music
The term that would be used is "Culture Vulture"

If they're legit Big L/hip hop fans, I don't see the problem, but if they're doing it just because "it's the NY thing to do, let's take this picture before we go to bottomless brunch with our freelance photographer friends" then I can see where the issue is

To clarify, the good times were good, but the bad times were really bad for some.

Was born in the 90's so didnt experience this era of NYC at all until Disney and Guiliani took over(thankful). However my pops tells me decepticons were causing havoc all over Brooklyn during this era. It was to the point where dudes were joining just so they wouldnt get their ***** beat down.

Isn't this what cats are proud of tho? The fact that it was dangerous? People shun the gentrification because it makes the hood seem soft right?

80s era NYC was still soft. Take a flight to a third world country. Ish makes NYC look like Disneyland

Wish I could've spent my late teens/early 20's in the 80s in LA. No cellphone cameras, surveillance was low, n SWAT ain't been made yet.

I'm not the type to linger in the past but, one thing I do hate is when hipsters walk leisurely through the same streets that me and my boys used to stay high alert in the late 90s/early 2000s.

This is also a part of NYC that people reminisce about also. The arts & music, fashion etc etc were all at a high, creativity was being forced upon everyone simply because opportunity was lacking.

Do yourself a favor and watch this film and see how much culture was prominent and developed in just the LES/Soho alone.

the authenticity of the city is what people miss.
