Construction on Hyperloop Begins Next Year

Cliffs: Elon Musk da gawd's plan for a hyperloop is coming to Cali soon. It's more of a prototype, so my fellow Californians, don't expect it to make the trip to NY shorter just yet. It's levels to this. It'll stretch between San Fran to LA. Musk expects it to take 30 mins, so prepare for the hipster invasion. It won't travel as fast as you might expect, because well, it's a prototype.

"Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, the company that wants to move the revolutionary transit system  out of Elon Musk’s brain into the real world, plans to start construction on an actual hyperloop next year.

OK, it will only run five miles around central California, and it won’t come anywhere close to the 800 mph Musk promised, but it’s a start.

The Hyperloop, detailed by the SpaceX and Tesla Motors CEO in a 57-page alpha white paper in August 2013, is a transportation network of above-ground tubes that would span hundreds of miles. Thanks to extremely low air pressure inside those tubes, capsules filled with people zip through them at near supersonic speeds.

The idea is to build a five-mile track in Quay Valley, a planned community (itself a grandiose idea) that will be built from scratch on 7,500 acres of land around Interstate 5, midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Construction of the hyperloop will be paid for with $100 million Hyperloop Transportation Technologies expects to raise through a direct public offering  in the third quarter of this year.

They’re serious about this, too. It’s not a proof of concept, or a scale model. It’s the real deal. “It’s not a test track,” CEO Dirk Ahlborn says, even if five miles is well short of the 400-mile stretch of tubes Musk envisions carrying people between northern and southern California in half an hour. Anyone can buy a ticket and climb aboard, but they won’t see anything approaching 800 mph. Getting up to that mark requires about 100 miles of track, Ahlborn says, and “speed is not really what we want to test here.”

Regardless of all the horrible things still happening in the world today, it's a pretty dope time to be alive. :nthat:

Can't imagine telling my grand kids about the first time I read about the first hyperloop to be constructed by man.

Yeah man it's crazy. Being born in the 80's and 90's is crazy because we've witnessed the boom in technology, but it's only getting started. I thought for a while transportation would be the next big shift in technology.

Waste all that money on dumb **** like this
Meanwhile we got people starving
People with low paying jobs
Struggling to make ends meet
Government programs that help the physically and mentally disabled get cut
I mean yeah that's cool but it's sooo much more that they could spend money

While I agree with you to a certain extent. This is chump change compared to how money is out into the military.

I know
It's crazy how we all know our country wastes money
But we never do anything about it

That's a very good point, man.

Being nostalgic is always awesome, but I can't even imagine the inconveniences of being without the access of the tech that we have today.

revolutionizing transportation will change the way we all live. dont see how someone can take umbrage with this. you'll be able to work anywhere in the world once this is up and running full scale.

How is it dumb? You took the bus before? Subway? This is nothing but a better version of that. This could help people get jobs. You'd no longer have to be stuck in one city.

There are enough vacant homes to house the homeless. The government chooses not to find a way to make that happen.

You said they should be spending the money on other things like you were talking about the government... you realize it's private money right?

The price will be dictated by the market. I can fly from Oakland to L.A. in one hour and five minutes for $60. I can drive there in 6 hours and $80 in gas. The pricing of the hyperloop will have to be competitive compared to those other alternatives or nobody will ride it. If you don't want to pay $100 to get to L.A. in 30 minutes fly your *** down then.

No one gives a damn about dinkie cities.

I have a hard time believing that a ticket to board one of these will be more than a flight or the 5+ hour drive it'll take. You really didn't have a point. You just didn't agree with the allocation of money, even though they're raising it themselves.

I think this a plus in for the future and development but this is going to keep the poor in their same environment. Maybe in 50 years everyone can benefit from this as the norm.
