We buy a lot of things that the market tells us are good to have but I'm pretty tired of settling for what's being given out. We don't really see anything original anymore. I think that the OnePlus phone company despite its short comings showed us that people can have nicer features for far lower prices, if money isn't wasted doing what corporate thinks will net them the maximum shareholder dividends. American Giant clothing is doing a similar thing but instead give us premium quality with a premium price. Obvious cash rules today, but if I could have a car or something built that I knew would last a lifetime, rather than be a failure waiting to happen after 100,000 miles. I think I'd be willing to pay 2x-3x extra. It's astounding that this is still acceptable to people to buy products like shoes and cars that could easily designed to last but instead are pumped out cheap for profit. The problem is determining how to get people to conduct the research and put out individualized products without the "for profit" company to pay them..
Unfortunately, I think it might be impossible for a capitalist free market economy to set up community based committees for consumer product development. If I could be the dictator of a country with the wealth and resources of the United States in a vacuum of global trade. I'd want to have research all focused toward common goals of the best products. I think America should return to its individualistic roots and move away from buying cookie cutter homes, cars, etc based around what the average person wants. Standardization should be cycled with periods of innovation. Research.. Create.. Standardize
(to lower costs).. Then repeat from the new baseline. Instead of what we do now which is kind of like a fitness guy trying to bulk up and make defined cuts at the same time. Sure you'll make progress if you follow strict methods, but why do it the hard way. Focus on one goal at a time.
