According to director Antoine Fuqua, the Jarhead actor would be in the boxing ring seven days a week in preparation for the role, with a six-hours-a-day training routine.
“I had him training twice a day in the boxing ring; he did two-a-days, seven days a week,” Fuqua told an American news site.
“I had him train at Floyd Mayweather’s gym in Vegas and we watched Floyd’s fights, and the Manny Pacquiao fight. He trained in New York at Church Gym with real fighters. We literally turned him into a beast.
“He was training like a fighter. I had him sparring, really getting hit. I put him in situations where I wanted to see what he was made of. No one but fighters understand the sacrifice it takes to be a fighter.”
Scott Laider, a fitness coach and columnist for Telegraph Men, suggests that Gyllenhaal would also have gone to several weight-training sessions a week in the six months leading up to filming, but that he would not have done this to the same extent as other body-builders.
“For him, it’s not just a question of gaining muscle mass,” Laider said. “He also had to learn to move and look like a boxer.
“If he was doing high volume workouts - a typical bodybuilder might do 16 sets a day - he would have been aching too much to box. I think he would have done weight training three times a week. There would have been a focus on big compound movements, like squats, deadlifts and military push-ups.”
The fitness coach added that while actors seeking to dramatically reduce their weight for a role - such as McConaughey for The Dallas Buyers Club - may be damaging their bodies in the long-term, it is “not inherently unhealthy” to gain a large amount of muscle mass in a short amount of time.
“It’s not easy to do. How many people can dedicate themselves to six hours a day working out, apart from athletes and actors? Depending on what their starting point was, I think someone coming to me and looking to gain muscle mass could do a similar thing in a year or 18 months.”
I was expecting something. Completely different too, left pleasantly surprised thoMaybe I'm the only one but I wasn't expecting it to be so emotional... I thought the plot was totally about something else. It was ok though... Didn't like how he played like was drugged out..
