Moving Advice Needed

Im moving from one side of the city to another in houston and i have no way to transport my bed/dresser/tv stand....do you guys have any tips or advice on how to hire movers or what popular companys to use....thanks in advance

FYI i have zero friends to help since im from new york.

Just rent a uhaul and go to staples and ask wen the truck comes then go on thay day and ask 4 boxes.
 
I mean...if u got it like that lol.

But you could just ask your buddies or if your single do it yourself.

I have moved alot and i kinda enjoyed moving lol...getting everything out and moving it....get a good workout...drive a truck....few cold ones after a long days work etc....

I mean i dunno your situation but imo if u can do it yourself do it
 
ive always had the mentality never pay for something i can do myself
when i've moved ive used my dads pickup truck and we pack it ourselves. if you have a friend or relative that has one i'd recommend that

Moved in New Years day and it was cold n raining n **** :smh:
 
If it's just the stuff you listed, which is about a room's worth of stuff, I would just rent a Uhaul and ask your buddies for some help and treat them out to dinner and beers when you're done. If it were several rooms, it'd probably be easier to get movers. When it's several rooms to a household, movers will be quicker and more efficient with everything and you'd save time and effort.

If you can afford to pay 5 dudes to put that work in, go ahead. Just make sure they do a good job. You don't want anything to get broken

From what OP described, it should be an easy move.
 
is this thread real? even the sewer rats got friends. why u going to Houston dough? thryw ouldnt renew ur state ID?

I was in a similar situation and just went with movers. The key thing is that you want to keep the time down since you are charged hourly.


  • Check the company rates. They may have a minimum for time (i.e. $70 per hour, 2 hour minimum). So if it only takes you 1 hour to move your stuff, you still have to pay 2 hours worth.
  • You get charged differently for a lot of things too: Which floor you're on (old and new), is there an elevator (old and new), number of rooms, the kind of item (i.e. more for grand piano)
  • Make sure your leases overlap (even if just a weekend) so you have time to move in and out of both places. Don't want to rush doing this all on one day. This also lets you keep things at your place you can put in your car and move another day. Then have the movers just deal with the large items and bulk of smaller stuff. May cut down on time.
  • Pack up the items yourself. Some companies may offer to do this, but your looking at extra money spent -- Either a charge to pack it up, or for the time spent doing it. They should wrap up furniture pieces for free if they are legit.
  • Boxes are cheap. If you can't find them for free, just go to home depot or lowes, they have big boxes for like $1.
  • When you reserve movers, they may have a wide time frame so try to clear your schedule (i.e. they'll get your place between 8 and 11)

Scenario: 1 bedroom apartment worth of stuff on second floor with no elevator, to another apartment on the second floor 30 minutes away. Took about an hour for everything (load truck, drive there and unload truck). Was under $200.

are these movers division 2 type players or syracuse football peeps that got cut at da combine? not sure if can trust.
 
just check craigslist or a google search. If you're in an apartment complex look at the newsletters they send out or around the leasing office; there's usually fliers and business cards around.
