"Former Atlanta Public Schools executive secretary Barbara Jackson testifies during the test-cheating trial at the Fulton County Superior Court in Atlanta on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014 afternoon. An incredibly rare criminal cheating trial in Atlanta is coming to an end, and it could send school teachers to prison for allegedly violating a law originally enacted to go after mobsters.

Prosecutors are using Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) to accuse former principals, teachers, and administrators of trying to boost their bonuses by conspiring to artificially raise kids' test scores. The dozen educators on trial could go to prison for up to 20 years.

During closing arguments on Tuesday, a lawyer for the defense suggested that it was a ludicrous abuse of power to bring racketeering charges against school teachers, as the Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported.

:smh: ****** up to do even though I know how messed up inner city education is...they failed the students pulling this ****

But hitting em with Rico charges? Cmon now

You got women raping students facing less time

How the hell does Georgia come up with the years for their crime? **** is always some ******ed number.

Oh they did this to increase their income

20 steep but still **** em...they don't care about the students just as much as an oppressor

You guys should definitely follow up with the sentencing. I doubt most, if any, of them gets the full 20 year bid.

It's all about making a statement... To try to deter any more of this happening. But we all know it will. When the tit's that big, everyone gets in line.

hasnt been proved yet that they made any money from it

but its the lying and not coming foward from the start that falls into the rico if i heard correctly

agreed that they prop wont get 20yrs but still they being held now no bond

Not a law guy but I thought Rico convictions usually carry steep sentences?

Also they usually have good evidence before they even come at you with a Rico to make sure they convict ya ***, right?

Dozens of other teachers got plea deals and gave testimony for the prosecution.

Can we go after the politicians for dumbing down the tests to boost test scores too? :nerd:

And the ones that cut funding for programs that help struggling students and schools :nerd:

Not cut, just reallocate funds to food & pensions.

HALF of every dollar of our state budget goes towards education and we're still 47-48 every year.

What state you in, Cali?

-Second are you throwing money spent in the university system too into that number?

-Third, is your state really the best representation of the USA as a whole (especially with it's unique demographics), and in this case Georgia. Where is took place?

I'm pretty sure when you get hit with Rico you have to serve the full sentence given to you, like no parole, or probation or bail or anything like that. I might be mistaken be that's how I thought it worked

Cold world... Messing over an entire generation of kids. Smh

How did they screw over an entire generation?...

If anything, by artificially increasing average test score, the school will look better... It's common knowledge that schools that have higher standardized test scores receive more money than schools that score low...

I will totally buy that they should have teached them better so that they didn't have to "cheat" the system... But there are do many variables in test scores that you can't place all the blame on the teachers...

i think so too

I thought it was because the sentences for RICO usually run consecutively not concurrently.

Any NT lawyer outchea to clear this up

-Edit: I just looked it up, racketeering is 20 years per count :x
