i was an entrepreneur for the past 5-6 years, so i got to make my own schedule and had plenty of free time.  however, recent year or so it's gotten a lot tougher so long story short i decided to look for a job.  i landed a job and have been working for the past month or so.  that steady paycheck is definitely appreciated as it has lifted a ton of stress off my shoulders.

with that said, i work at 8 so i have to go to bed around 11, since it takes time to get ready/time to get there.  on week days come home, shower then eat and i'm left with a couple hours of free time before bed.  i'm usually pretty tired, so there isn't much i want to do but rest.

so  i've been sitting here and just thinking.  is this life until i'm at an age of retirement or have enough money to be financially secure ?  it's just tough grinding out the weekdays to wait for the arrival of the weekend.  which breeze right on by and seem to be over at a blink of an eye.

what do you nters like to do to keep you going day after day ?  just keep thinking about the paycheck and stay on the grind ?

so basically i'm what how do you achieve that WORK/LIFE balance ? what kind of stuff do you do  ?

How much time do you spend commuting each day?  What you have to do is look at older peeps in the working environment.  You need to look at them and envision whether or not you see yourself walking along the same path.  Any body that has worked in a company know you'll have the rookies, the fixed assets, as well as the 'this was my first job and last job' outta college types.

You just have to deal with it, and learn to appreciate time.  You'll figure it out though.  You'll figure out how to kill 2 birds with one stone and understand that a bird in hand is worth two in the bushes.

I always tell myself, never be complacent or you'll just be stuck.  You'll always want to get ahead.  At the end of the day, it's all about pay checks.  Hopefully you can find something you enjoy doing and something you don't regret compromising for.

A thread on office politics / drama would be good too. LOLZ

I relatively enjoy my job so I try to stay optimistic and have a good attitude while grinding. Being a resident sucks but I like what I'm doing interest wise so that helps

Try to stay active by going to the gym as I find it gives more energy

I try to maximize my free time with my family, my close friends and my girl but it's hard when sometimes all I want to do is sleep.

I definitely make the most out of the weekends although they're too short usually

I use my paycheck to do things that interest me (after bills are paid, of course). And I aint talmbout buying ephemeral/material things.

For example, I am getting ready to take a carpentry course at the local CC because I've always been interested in that. I'm always looking for opportunities to add to my skill set, and the steady pay from a 9-5 allows me to do just that.

Remember, there's nothing wrong with a 9-5 if you're doing things you love during and after that time.

I'm 19 and just got into my trade. I'm looking at 40 years as an electrician before I retire. My goals are to climb as high up the ladder as I can so when I am ready to retire, my body won't be damn near dead like most other people who are of that age. I'd like to become a master in my field and be the best to do it.

Can't lie, sometimes thinking I'm set and have my career for the next 40 years is scary. However, when I see a room or a building light up for the first time after putting all of my energy and hard work into it, I feel so proud and amazing :pimp: I'm very fortunate to be able to wake up and most mornings say "I love my job" or "Time to build America."

With that being said, I'm out at 3:30 according to my contract and get home at around 4 ish, started taking a boxing class and currently saving up for a Harley amongst other toys and investments. Work on yourself or anything you want. Make goals and knock em down, one by one. On the weekends, I'd rather be working to be honest, but if there's no overtime I usually take it easy and get ready for that next week of work.

if there isn't traffic, commute is about a 25-30 min drive.  it's just that after work i'm pretty tired and just go home to shower and eat.  wind down for a couple hours by surfing the net or whatever and then off to bed.  this is rinse and repeat 5 days a week pretty much.  i'm referring more to how do you try to keep the weekdays more interesting to keep yourself going until friday ?  just hard to grind 5 days and then get 2 days off and then back to it.  i'm trying to get into the psyche and mindset of others to change more to a more optimistic view and maybe the light at the end of the tunnel will be brighter.  i'm feeling decent about the outlook, but with life i'm always trying to improve.

Good ways to break up the work week are getting a regular gym schedule going, maybe finding an adult league (flag football, basketball, kickball, etc) in your area, going on dates, etc. Creating a routine for yourself outside of work can make the week feel that much better.

bravelude - money motivates me.  but i also want balance in life.

storm, i have a gf but we basically don't have time to see each other until fri-sun due to work schedules.  i do play ball once during the week, but feel like i'm pretty tired after work.

i guess i was just looking for some answers that probably don't exist.  just have to suck it up and do what i gotta do in the meantime.

Proud brother of the IBEW. If you have any questions feel free to message me.

I highly recommend the field. Get to work with your hands, get dirty, decent pay, pension.

i thought you meant dudes that be posting on here all day

As of now I work for an aluminum foundry/power plant

Pays good raise every 90 days but the hours are crazy 2-12:30 (10 hours)

Only get a few hours in the week to "relax " I guess today I'm lucky to have the day off but I can't complain

Wouldn't say I love the job but I dont hate it.

Don't want to but eventually I'll be leaving this job to find something more convenient and in first shift so I can enjoy these summer days and get ready to go back to to finish trade school for cars .

As far as balancing it your time management has to be on point (mine is mad decent but could be better )

i may be getting ahead of myself, but it just seems like we work all our lives and than before we know it we're old and grey and asking where all the time went.  just wanna make the most of my love and spend time with loves ones, experience new things and travel the world.  trying to get a more optimistic point of view of work life.  not used to it as i used to do my own thing and had a lot of time to do whatever, whenever pretty much.  just need time to adjust to this lifestyle.

edited it for you guys that thought it was about full time posters on nt lol

Once you get more experience you get better easier jobs and will have the energy to do thibgs

For me its less of an adjustment. I went to college and I pursued what I loved doing--art.

People talked about starving artist and blah blah blah but for me, it was my passion. So, i was either gonna fail in life trying to do what i love or be a successful person in the creative field. Now that I'm out of college, busted my *** on my portfolio, freelanced for a bit, struggled, I have job--no i have a career that doesn't even feel like work. The money covers my bills and i'm on the higher end of salary for a graphic designer while still in my mid twenties. After another year or so ill be setting higher goals o be a creative director, then art director, then whatever else after that. On my free time, i do other things that interest me.

The work/life balance isn't as hard when you love what you do. I understand that sometimes responsibilities often hold us--but if you dont wanna be miserable find out a way to do what you love and get compensated for it. The plan can take 1 year, 50 years, whatever it takes just work towards it.

Best of luck OP.

I'd like to work for myself eventually (when I pay off my loans )

So I i can do what I love and relax when I want on my own terms .

Cosign on the extra courses. I got bored at my job after about the first 6 mo until I started taking classes on my own time. They can be related to your work, but they definitely don't have to be. I found that for me at least I just needed to have my energy spread out over different interests because focusing 100% of my energy on nothing but work is what got me burnt out mad quick.

it's been a month.

wait a couple of months you'll be used to it and will be able to do what you want after work.

monday / wednesday i work out or play sports after work.

Thursday I usually go to 5 to 7 (that end up being 6 to 10 usually) with coworkers / friends.

and i'm always in good shape the next morning for work.

tuesdays i'll usually sleep early (like 9ish )

i've been working full time for 4 months. I can imagine how used to the full time hour i'll be in a couple of years.

I didn't have the work/life balance back when I was in corporate. Now that I'm an entrepreneur, I feel more at peace. It's easier making my own schedule and resting when I need it. The steady checks were a luxury, but I'm going to make it.
