Living in the Bay Area?

Hello all.  I have a job interview coming for a company in Silicon Valley (specifically Sunnyvale) and debating and thinking if I should move out there (assuming I get an offer that also is good) from Chicago.  How in the world do you guys afford rent out there?  I'm looking at apartments on CL and the rent is just unbelievable even for dated apartments.  How do you guys do it?  Where do you live?  How is the traffic?  Any advice would be appreciated.

Rent is insane in the Bay Area. Specifically the Peninsula. I live in Redwood City. I don't work for a tech company but I do have a good job. I wonder at points how some people can afford to stay in the area with the rent now a days.

Traffic on 101 (I'm assuming this is what you will be on being in Sunnyvale) isn't bad. It can be bumper to bumper but depending on where you are going to live also.

If I can suggest something is look into living in the East Bay. Newark, Fremont, Milpitas. The drive to Sunnyvale will not be bad and you will save some money on the rent side.

Thanks. The job I'm after isn't necessarily in the tech sector but they are a massive employer in the area. I was doing more research on the east bay last night and seems like crime is higher out there with many people reporting their cars getting broken into or stolen from their apartment complex. Has me wondering if it is even worth moving to the bay at all. Also seems like I'd never be able to buy a home out there.

Where in the east bay did you look? The three places I named aren't bad but of course there will be crime everywhere. Buying a home out here is pretty depressing at times. Without two incomes, IE husband and wife. I wouldn't suggest moving out here unless you have to or you think this job is the one.

I was looking at Militipas and reviews of some of the complexes on yelp have residents complaining about lots of crime. Only single income for now which is why I'm debating. It is a good position and would help my career path, but the offer would have to be right for me to afford to live out there with the lifestyle I'm living right now.

Any must visit sneaker shops in the bay area im here on vacation for a week would like to check some out. Thanks for the help guys

a "good job" only lands you an apartment here in the Bay Area.. sad man.. we want a house.. not a condo, not a townhouse, but detached single family home.. definitely an american dream.

good luck man.

i didnt even know they had a shop out here, thought they were only in LA. Ill be thru friday or thursday most likely @broccoliavenger

rent control. been in my apt for yrs
my advice would be looking at places in the east bay. dont know if you are driving, but BART can get you from east bay to city

you dont move out here unless you got money or willing to share a small apt with a bunch of roommates

Just stopped in on the way to the giants game. Dope store u got, do u do phone orders? Dropped too much this trip already but u got some great prices @broccoliavenger

I got the job offer but they offered **** so I'm not going to take it. Almost insulting of an offer. Oh well thanks for the feedback everyone.

ya i got near 2x my salary but apartment hunting was the worst experience ever. not to mention that i still probably will never be able to afford a house here.

Yeah I'm actually quite pissed about the offer. Project manager position for one of the largest companies in the world and they offer me less than what I'm making now adjusted to Chicago salaries. They missed the mark by $40k...

Yeah no one has responded in here in close to two months so I'll resurrect this

I have an interview with a large public agency in SJ (downtown SJ to be exact) and the starting pay is close to $55k. I think that if I get the job, I can negotiate the job since I have some experience and it's a union job so we'll see.

I would rather use BART/Caltrain for my commute but where would be a great place to live? Was looking at Union City/Fremont area. Any help would be appreciated!

They are building BaRT though. It will take a while. The Light rail runs through downtown. I guess it depends on where you want to live and/or commute from. I see that you are looking in Fremont or Union City area. At least from Fremont, you could take the bus to Light Rail or maybe even Downtown? Not so sure about Union City as far as public transit.

Union City has it's own public transit and AC Transit provides service to Fremont and UC BART stations. And I peeped the extension being done in a couple of years too.

If you're on a budget and don't mind the surroundings and commute, Hayward, San Leandro and San Lorenzo is cheaper compared to Union City, Fremont and Newark. If you really don't mind, look in to Gilroy or Watsonville.
