Setting aside conspiracy theories which may or may not be true:
Explaining like I would to a 5 year old, Reddit style
There was too much coke
Nobody was making money off of coke
Somebody had the bright idea of adding baking soda
Baking soda makes rocks, which create a much more potent high
You can sell rocks at a much better profit because smoking hard = more highs than snorting soft with the same amount of cocaine. So you can buy coke from a plug, chef it up, and then sell it as rock for much more than what you paid for it
Ridiculously addictive
