but it makes sense. because knowing the 1 piece of information their told, they can narrow the possibilities in half. knowing the other doesn't know also cuts possibilities out, and narrows it down. it makes sense.

The answer is July 16th.
Albert knows the month but not the day. He knows Bernard doesn't know so that means Albert knows the month & the date to be 1 that does have multiple options but not a singled out date. If the month had a singled out date Bernard could already know the birthday if it was May 19th or June 18th since are the only months without a duplicate date, so right away May & June are GONE.
That means the birthdate is in July or August.
Bernard knows his date, that means Bernard is only thinking between 2 dates this entire time while Albert is left with 2 or 3 to choose from.
Bernard knows now that he won't know the month by knowing his date alone.
We again now know the date isn't the 18th or 19th or Bernard would know right away.
We know Bernard can't know based on the month alone so that gives him the same conclusion that June is out.
We know also now that Bernard knows the birthday, that means the 14th is not the number because that's in both July & August.
For Bernard to know the birthdate after knowing he can't know from the month alone & the date alone the date had to be July 16th. Bernard can't know the month still if the birthday is August 15th or 17th & Albert also then know. If the birthday was in August then Albert would still be out the loop, Albert could know August & still not know the 14th, 15th or 17th.
