On April 25th, a devastating earthquake registering a magnitude of 7.8 struck the country of Nepal. As many as 10,000 are feared dead, and thousands more have lost their homes and businesses.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimates that over 8.1 million people are currently in need of aid.  More than 3 million require food assistance and greater than 14,300 face serious injuries.

The government of Nepal has projected that over 130,000 homes have been totally destroyed, and an additional 85,800 have sustained damage.  Tens of thousands of displaced people and families are currently living out of tents in relief camps.

In the past, our community has come together to raise over $10,000 for disaster relief efforts in the Philippines following Super Tyhpoon Haiyan, and over $18,000 to assist those impacted by the 2011 famine in East Africa

The time has come for us to pool our efforts and our resources to help the people of Nepal as they work to rebuild and recover from this terrible tragedy.

We've established a group fundraising page with Mercy Corps, the organization we entrusted with previous fundraisers devoted to the 2011 earthquake in Japan and Super Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, to accept your contributions:

https://www.mercycorps.org/people/niketalk/NepalEarthquake

In recognition of your generosity, we will be awarding special badges to all users who contribute $10 or more to our group fundraising page and leave their account name in the comments section.

$10 - 24  Basic Supporter Badge  (Designed by @Nawzlew)

$25 - 99  Special Contributor Badge (Designed by @Zephyr1983)

$100+  Elite Fundraiser Badge (Also designed by @Zephyr1983)

(If you like one badge in particular, you can always have your choice of any badge equal to or lesser than your pledge level.  Already donated?  You can combine donations to reach a higher badge level.  Just send me a message.)

Badges will be rolling out soon to those who've already contributed.

To get credit for your donation, be sure you contribute through this page only: HTTPS://WWW.MERCYCORPS.ORG/PEOPLE/NIKETALK/NEPALEARTHQUAKE and leave your NikeTalk screen name in a comment when you submit your contribution!!

If you cannot afford to contribute money, please spare us a moment of your time and help us spread the word.  Our initial goal is $3,000 - and we've already raised our first thousand.  Let's go, #NT!

In further recognition of your your sacrifices and contributions, NikeTalk will match ALL qualifying user donations made through our fundraising page through May 31st, up to a total of $10,000.

KATHMANDU, Nepal — Tens of thousands of people were spending the night in the open under a chilly and thunderous sky after a powerful earthquake devastated Nepal on Saturday, killing nearly 1,400, collapsing modern houses and ancient temples and triggering a landslide on Mount Everest. Officials warned the death toll would rise as more reports came in from far-flung areas.

Inspector Yuvraj Khadka of Nepal's national police force said that rescue effort was continuing through the night and the death toll had reached 1,394 people. The magnitude 7.8 earthquake, which originated outside the capital Kathmandu, was the worst tremor to hit the poor South Asian nation in over 80 years. It strong enough to be felt all across the northern part of neighboring India, Bangladesh, Tibet and Pakistan, where a total of 50 people died.

As Nepal trembled, residents fled homes and buildings in panic. Walls tumbled, trees swayed, power lines came crashing down and large cracks opened up on streets and walls. Clouds of dust began to swirl all around.

Within hours of the quake, hospitals had filled up with hundreds of injured people. With organized relief and rescue lacking, many survivors were brought to hospitals by friends and relatives in motorized rickshaws, flatbed trucks and cars. Residents used their bare hands, crowbars and other tools to dig through rubble and rescue survivors.

More than two dozen aftershocks jolted the area after the first quake, which struck just before noon. At the time, Shrish Vaidya, who runs an advertising agency, was in his two-story house outside the capital Kathmandu with his parents.

"It is hard to describe. The house was shaking like crazy. We ran out and it seemed like the road was heaving up and down," Vaidya, 46, told The Associated Press. "I don't remember anything like this before. Even my parents can't remember anything this bad."

The initial goal is $3,000.  Who will be the first to contribute?

To those interested in creating graphics for us, we need three different badge designs:  one for those who contribute between $10-24, one for those who contribute between $25-99, and one for those who contribute over $100.

These were the winning designs for our Typhoon Haiyan fundraiser:

haiyan basic badge.gif

$10 - 24  Basic Supporter Badge

$25 - 99  Special Contributor Badge

haiyan elite 3.gif

$100+  Elite Fundraiser Badge

To work on our current system, the graphics MUST fit into the same space as the above badges - no exceptions.

We're looking for clean, graphic, stylish designs that build upon each other.

Another great example is @lobotomybeats
book design used in last fall's Room to Read fundraiser:

Since this is for the people of Nepal, using the Nepalese flag would be one appropriate direction, and would fit in with our badges for Japan, Somalia, and the Philippines.

If you contribute to our campaign before the badges are ready, you WILL still receive one as soon as they're done.  You can also upgrade your contribution to receive a higher badge tier, and you can always select the badge associated with a lower tier if you prefer - so there's no downside whatsoever to contributing now.

To receive your badge, be CERTAIN that you leave your NikeTalk account name in the comments section!!!

I was recently just in Nepal and it has some of the most beautiful landscapes and hospitable people. My prayers go out to those suffering. This is a huge setback for a small developing country. Damn R.I.P.

We should be able to set up a group fundraiser with Mercy Corps for this.

Ideally, we'd get some help creating the necessary donation badges.  (Traditionally, we've had one for a $10 tier, $25 tier, and $100 tier.)  @lobo2mybeats was kind enough to design the badges for our Room to Read drive this fall, and our Typhoon Haiyan relief badges were designed by @Fongstarr @Nawzlew and @spicedham

If anyone else knows of a talented artist who can help us out, please direct them to this thread or have them send me a PM.

I'm also hoping to check in with Room to Read on Monday to see if there's any possibility that the library we sponsored in Nepal has been damaged, in case we need to raise some money to help cover repairs.

@Methodical Management, I'd be more than happy to take a crack at the badges if you proceed to set up a fundraiser.
