I guess what I'm wondering is why choose Nike in the first place? I'm new to collecting, and am trying to get a feel for what I should start my collection with.  My friend who is an avid collector swears by Nike, and told me to start there.  What I'm wondering why do you guys go with the brand?

As someone on the other end of the spectrum of collecting, don't start bro. Dead srs.

I wish I could go back and tell my 16 year old self the same thing.

haha that's what I've been told, but I've been looking for somethin new to get into though.  Is it the price or the addiction that makes you say that?

Nike has history op

They use the finest materials...made by the best workers.
All of their releases are made easily acceptable to us...the consumers.

And their prices are very...very fair.

Nike is the smart move opeee.

Just do it

I agree with this.

If I could go back and tell my teenage self about the money I could have been growing, I dang near could have bought a house for cash

Oh whale..

If you do it, do not over think it. Buy what YOU like.. not what ANYONE ELSE likes.

Don't be tempted by marketing, social media and hype.

Be an individual.

The 90s

/Thread.

This, they did a pretty good job inserting themselves into a culture, recognizing that, building that relationship and capitalizing off it. In an era where we kept hearing rumors of big names "despising" the young'ns that rocked their ****, nike embraced and celebrated it.

Don't even start op, it's not worth it. If you are going to start buy what you like, not what you think others will like.

It's really all preference. Buy what you like regardless of brand.

What makes Nike a staple in so many closets is, to put it briefly;

1.) Consistent quality designs

2.) Brand culture

3.) Star spokesmen

4.) Revolutionary and groundbreaking models like the Air Force 1, Air Max, and Air Jordan line that have become timeless classics.

5.) Diversity

6.) Some of the world's greatest of all time marketing teams. (seriously, Nike was killing the game back in the 80s and 90s. Like Mike ads, Mars Blackmon, Hare Jordan, Bo Knows)

7.) Continuing to break ground with the newest technology (Flynit, Performance woven uppers, Flywire, Lunarlon....this goes all the way back to Zoom Air)

I could keep going.

if you are wanting to collect just to collect something dont even start

i started because i played basketball and wanted to be like the players

it was a culture thing, never did it because it was the cool thing to do

I started with Nike and Jordan's because thats what was on the feet of all the drug dealers uptown and in the bx but my family was poor b they were not about to pay electric bill money for some shoes. Got a job years later and wasted money on jays and nike basketball shoes I could have been saving. I wish I could back. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug

True.

This is an expensive hobby. Lot of dudes on here spending $100-$200+ weekly and the worst part is, it's not even practical. 10-20 pairs aight you got a little collection. A nice rotation, something to match everything. But lotta people in the game going on hundreds of pairs and would take years to rock them all JUST ONCE once you account for work, formal events, and other days you can't wear them.

Do it cause it interests you but also be smart about it. I just bought Kyrie 1 iDs and the ASGs in a span of two weeks. That's $285 on two pairs and one's for hooping and it still took me a minute to pull the trigger on both. Only kicks I've copped so far this year and there won't be many more. Been putting away a lot of savings and paying off debts and every time I see that savings rise it gives me a feeling no shoe ever could. In the long run, it pays off dividends.

Sarcasm?

Most of us collected Nike and Jordan because it made us feel cool. Plain and simple.

As a competitive athlete, the brand always pushed towards better achievement. Thsts what caught my attention back in the early 90s.
They've always looked fresh as fuh too.

For me:

--80's movies product placement that influenced me as a kid.

--Nike's marketing campaigns in the 90's that influenced me as a teen.

--Seeing Jordan play in his prime.

But collecting? My advise is, if they hold no sentimental value to YOU don't. I have memories connected to NIKE's due to the era I grew up in. Was I influenced by media? Yes. But now it's like 3rd and 4th hand influence because NIKE's ads are nowhere near what they were when I was growing up. Most cats wearing Jordans have never seen him play. And I'm not bitter, but I just don't get the appeal for young cats. Y'all don't know who Bo Jackson, Deion Sanders, Scottie Pippen, Charles Barkley, etc WERE. Y'all just know them as old dudes doing interviews.

Shout out to wayniac211 wayniac211 because I forgot that I also played football and ran track in NIKEs to because of the superior build and look of the shoes.

- Buy what you like. I love Nike but I also own mad Adidas and Reebok shoes. Even have some Fila shoes. As for clothing, Nike makes much better clothes than Adidas and Reebok. Quality and fitting wise. The price just keeps going up and Nike is losing their mind.

-As for collecting, it's a fun hobby. I did it for around 10 years. I collected because I had been obsessed with sneakers since I was like 8 or 9 years old. Seeing the Shaqnosis, Air Griffey Max, Air More Uptempo and shoes like that. I wouldn't do it just because it's a trend right now and it's cool to do on FB and IG.

Yo.. I remember walking into niketown PDX in the 90s and always seeing huge Posters of jordan, Agassi, Deion, michael Johnson...etc with motivational quotes towards winning. Just do it :smokin

Marketing....

As a young kid I wore what my parents bought me. They saw all of the commericals and bought the hype and passed it on to me. Growing up it was the brand of shoes to wear. When those eastbay mags came in I would go straight to the Nikes lol.

Now that I'm older I buy what I like but I'm not gonna front and say that my kids won't be introduced to Nike as well

It's both of those reasons and the fact that 10-15 years later, I look back and realize it was all a waste of time and especially money. Sure, there are some pairs that I love and would like to always have for nostalgia and sentimental reasons, but for the most part, 90% of my "collection" is just a waste. I don't wear tennis shoes to work nor would I want to and the only opportunity I can wear my shoes is on weekends. It's been like that for me for about 10 years and to be completely honest, I would rather wear something comfortable than a shoe that's considered to be popular. If money is no object or your career is one in which shoes are a focal point, then none of this would apply to you.

If you're wanting to get into something new, do something productive that will benefit you and that you could maybe invest into later as a small business or something that allows you to grow into whatever career you're looking into. While I understand that you can flip shoes, it's not worth it. Enjoy your youth, but at the same time, set yourself up for the future. While the people around you are focused on material wealth and things that provide short term satisfaction, you should recognize that and separate yourself from it.

There's a reason so many of us say to not start collecting. When you're young, it's very easy to get caught into the hype; that's just the marketing of Nike doing it's job.

Some of the non hyped up Nike's are actually comfortable as ****.

Example, Nike Pegasus, most comfortable running shoe I have ever purchased in my life. I have so many shoes and I find myself wearing them 3 times a week just because.
