Looking to purchase an electric smoker within the next month or so, any reason why a masterbuilt smoker would be a poor choice?

Idk I love my masterbuilt

, minus is not creating a smoke ring..and depending on the model (I was told to buy one of the older, windowless models), I think it's a good smoker to start off with

I've posted about mines in here before, two things it was recommended to buy as well was an additional thermometer, the one connected to the smoker is not accurate sometimes...and to get a smoker box to put inside it so you dont have to switch out the wood chips every 30 minutes.

This is the one I have

I certainly wan to upgrade one of these days

Is there a reason you went with an electric vs charcoal/briquette smoker? Live in an apartment?

Personally i never had any thoughts of an electric smoker, except when i was living in an apt with a no gas/charcoal policy. Isnt it basically just an oven?

Idk man, if you plan on smoking, get a actual stickburner your food will come out way better, if you dont want that just stick to grillin on a old smokey

Those cheap thin metal smoker aint the business.

If yoi use one, and then use somethin more legit you will see a difference before you even eat the food.

When I bought I lived in an apartment initially but I got it for convenience of maintaining temp more than anything

an outside oven with a woodchip compartment I guess is a good description

yeah I get the taste wont be the same because the lack of charcoal but the difference in taste isnt too drastic to me in comparison, still plenty of smoke flavor

if youre out of that apt now man you have to get a real smoker. Pick up the medium smokey mountain for 300. With some minor mods you can make that thing bullet proof. You wont regret it, will be a little more work though.

They were clearing these out at a local store. I saw it on Monday and couldn't get it out of my head - I went back and they'd halved the price again. With some minor mods it gets good reviews. I've already sealed all the joints with high heat compound.

I've done ribs and brisket on my gas grill but I'm really looking forward to trying this out.

Is that a oklohoma joe?

How thick is the steel?

Thats a great smoker to start with from what ive heard.

Yeah, that's it - Oklahoma Joe Highland. Not sure how thick the steel is buti it's really solid - about 200lbs. I'll measure it later.

It was reduced to $120 which seemed worth it.

What mods did u need to do (or are being suggested) with it besides sealing the joints?

Not a bad deeal for that smoker. Make surr you put the neat on the opposite side of the firebox.

1/8" according to my calipers.

The other mods are to make a baffle inside the main unit to direct the smoke along the bottom and to add a piece to the exhaust to get it down to grill level. Supposed to really even out the heat.

I've got an old gas grill I was going to throw out but I think some of the side panels would make a good baffle - just mild steel but it doesn't need to be fancy.
