This is the scenario, my buddy is in a pickle

21K car: Used 2012 Acura TSX (about 20,000+ miles)

18K car: Used 2014 Mazda 3 (about 8000+ miles)

Intends to use the difference to buy a Breitling (sort of a birthday gift for himself)

Which NT?

is he dead set on those options?

v6 or i4 tsx?

$3,000 for an instrument that tells time.

No.

That's just me tho. I'd get a nice car, 20k can get you a pretty good car, I'd use the other rack on other items. Absolute most I'll spend on a timepiece is $500,$1000 if I get stupid filthy rich.

Lets look at it from an analytical standpoint. I sold cars for an authorized Mercedes dealer here in the city. Based on both models (which both hold their value pretty well), I would personally go with the Acura. Mazda's are great cars but I can't see myself dropping $20k on Mazda's most affordable model.

Two years from now:

Mazda's estimated residual value (guesstimation mixed with research as well as driving the car at industry average 15k miles/yr): Around 13k at the absolute best (aka $291 a month over 24 months,)

Acura's estimated residual value (guesttimation mixed with research as well as driving the car at industry average 15k miles/yr): Around $15k at the absolute best (aka %250 a month over 24 months).

The Acura already has less than industry average miles therefore making it a better buy imo. Although it may be outside of factory warranty, it has such low miles you won't have to worry about much.

**** that damn watch although Breitling watches don't depreciate much. Save that money for maintenance or at least go to the casino to double it.

Some good responses in here. Keep them coming.

His mind set is this - he sorta wants to get something "luxurious" for himself this year. He's in his late 20's.

He see's the Acura as a basic entry level luxury car.

And the Mazda3 which is a very highly rated sedan, and the Breitling as his luxury item.

Little background: He's a common sense dude. He's current car is a 2000 which he's had for about 7-8 years. And he owns no expensive timepieces at all.

Hoosier came through with the knowledge and then completely negated everything by saying going to the casino

You said he was looking at the Mazda3 sedan, why get it used with 8k+ miles for $18k when a brand new one starts at $17k? Just got to negotiate the hell out of that car and try and get it at close to invoice or even below.

Everyone should just find a car that they like, then downgrade $4000 from there, and go on vacation with a breitling

I mean **** if hes trying to buy a 3k watch he will barely wear might as well try to invest it or gamble it. Guess i left out the key component in "investing". I'd save it for gas, maintenance expense or for a vacay. **** that watch bruh. Girls cant tell a Breitling from a Fossil

Yeah you're right man. Because actual financial advisors have always recommended investments that have always presented a positive ROI.

What kind of Breitling can you get for $3k?

A used one. They're great watches. It'll probably depreciate slower than any car that dude buys and may even gain value depending on how well its maintained and what happens with Breitling.

Girls cant tell a Breitling from a Fossil

Yes they can.

"Took the rollie off, put the Breitling back on."

I thought only Rolexes hold value like that?

Tell your friend if he was a tru baller he'd get a $3,000 used Altima and an $18,000 Rolex Yacht Master.

How are you going to be wearing a $3000 watch while driving a $20,000 car?

One has little to do with the other in my opinion. Otherwise it becomes a never ending cycle of "how are you going to drive ___ car in ___ house, or wear ____shoes in ____car.

I've have worn the same watch for 15 years, meanwhile I have gone through 4 cars in that time.

I agree with this. You can't take your car into the club but you can take that watch anywhere
