First I find out Tom & Jerry had racist beginnings, now this. I'm not surprised, just disappointed

I can't post the pic because I don't know if it's allowed.

"A California auction house is selling an early drawing by Dr. Seuss that's sure to disappoint the parents and children who adore his later work.

The 1929 color illustration for "Judge" magazine depicts a blatantly racist scenario and uses a slur to describe black people. It's being auctioned for a minimum bid of $20,000.

In the four-panel drawing titled ''Cross-Section of The World's Most Prosperous Department Store," the artist depicts scenarios in which rich men can purchase items to make their lives more difficult.

These include a fly for your ointment and a monkey wrench for your machinery. The final and largest panel features a crowd of men rendered in classic blackface caricature, with dark skin and pronounced red lips, being presented to a white shopper. A sign reads: "A n---- for your woodpile."

It's a news item. Don't see why you can't post it. Anyway, it's not like Mr. Geisel was a standup dude. Here's the suicide note his first wife wrote, as he was with another woman while she was dying of cancer:

"Dear Ted, What has happened to us? I don't know. I feel myself in a spiral, going down down down, into a black hole from which there is no escape, no brightness. And loud in my ears from every side I hear, 'failure, failure, failure...' I love you so much ... I am too old and enmeshed in everything you do and are, that I cannot conceive of life without you ... My going will leave quite a rumor but you can say I was overworked and overwrought. Your reputation with your friends and fans will not be harmed ... Sometimes think of the fun we had all thru the years ..."

I know I can post the info, just not too sure about the drawing.

at that note.

I speak French and I used to read these comics called Astro, black were literally portrayed as monkeys. I have a picture of it somewhere. I was so mind blown and offended. Imma look for it.

Same thing with tintin comics, unfortunately that was the reality of things back then. Word to some of those racist Looney Toons/Tom and Jerry cartoons

What are you suprised about?

This country was built on racism. Literally.

Thats not black people talking crazy, its the truth.

At one point racism was the norm.

This is why all white males over the age of 40 are suspect.

I know its probably sarcasim, but Lobotomy got me studing the hell out of that pic for something funny.

We had this discussion years ago.

Many of the quotes and images are broken due to the import, but much of the sentiment remains the same today.  It reminds me a bit of Amy Shumer's recent Bill Cosby trial sketch.  Apparently some people would prefer to preserve the sanctity of their nostalgia over the sanctity of their values.
