Isabel Laxamana, a 13-year-old girl in Tacoma, Washington died by suicide after jumping off a highway overpass on Friday, May 29. Days before, Laxamana’s father Jeff had reportedly punished her for an unspecified transgression by cutting off her hair and uploading a video to YouTube. There’s now a controversy brewing online and among the girl’s friends and family over whether the video caused her death.

Tacoma’s News Tribune reports that the girl, who they don’t identify by name, exited a car and jumped off a bridge onto Interstate 5. She was taken to a Seattle hospital, where she died on Saturday. Friends of the Laxamana family are now raising money for funeral costs on a GoFundMe site.
While the social media mob is busy coming for Laxamana’s family, it’s also important to note that determining cause and effect when it comes to suicide isn’t easy. We have little information about what else was going on in Laxamana’s life, although in a Google Plus post from last year, she writes about feeling bullied at school.

I've been against this since the first day I seen a video of such.

There is no type of parenting evolved in those videos. Either on or off camera.

Since when is giving your kid a bad haircut considered discipline? You just make yourself and your kid look like a fool. There is a huge difference between embarrassment and discipline

Wouldn't ever do that to my daughter...

RIP to the girl, I hope those youtube shaming videos stop popping up because I can definitely see how they can be dangerous.

Chick had bullying issues already and was probably leaning towards suicide regardless.

None of them kids that got the Sherman Hemsley killed themselves.

I can't empathize with suicide, not when there's kids homeless, born with aids, limbless etc...fighting to live.

Stupid *** father..today's generation is very sensitive. There's self harm for attn and then there's self harm due to humiliation and guilt. Like bruh said above, something else might have been going on

Parents not having respect for their own child. I did some off the wall **** when I was young but when my parents disceplined me it was between me and them. With that said, I think there is more to the story. She must have been depressed for a while.

Definitely some deeper issues there. I remember being disciplined in front of some friends, it was embarrassing, but I didn't want to kill myself.

Stupid practice but killing yourself over that? Something else was going on
Definitely. She looked Filipino and if that's the case...Her parent's must have been really overbearing and expected nothing but a 4.0 from her. Sad.

I really don't understand the benefit of parenting and disciplining a child like this. What is the benefit? I only see the kid have more emotional problems and growing dislike to her parents. Really pisses me off.

I know for sure, I'm not going to be a father who is ignorant and over bearing.

Stupid parenting is stupid. Idiots.

Like, I understand when a Dad writes on Jordans to shame his son, because theyre only Jordans. But to humilate a 13-yr old child is ridiculous. I just volunteered at a Jr. High Camp and I was shocked at things they have to deal with.

the parents do it more for likes and e-pats on the back
Pretty much.

there was one video that recently went viral which i loved. The father faked as if he was bout to shave his sons hair off and instead dropped knowledge on a lot of people about parenting

I hate do as I say not as I do parenting.

I understand the message he was trying to convey. Don't be stupid, don't be rash. Don't do anything that has potential to ruin your life...yadda yadda. Then goes off to teach her a lesson by doing something rash and stupid and ruined his life.

I wonder how the talks went the other 2 times he "warned" her about getting messed up.

Having daughters of my own, I hate stories like these man.
