Just made the opposite move. Lived and worked in the bay. Company moved me to Orange County.

All y'all fools taking about Tracy, Modesto, Stockton, etc. y'all smoking crack. With gas prices these days, how much are you really saving? No way I'm giving up 4 hours of my life everyday to sit In a car dealing with the stress of traffic. Let alone dedicate 8+ work hours. By the time u get home, ur day is gone. Some life

Yeah most of those people sitting in traffic are those with families and they can't really move without affecting their entire family situation

Yea I don't know anyone without two kids and a mortgage who commutes more than a total of 2 hours per day.

If you're under 40 and and driving 100 miles to your "job" you're living life wrong.

So I found some 1 BRs for 1150-1200 in SJ. They're just hella far from Downtown

Back to the drawing board. Interview is coming up and feeling the pressure a bit but we will see.

what is hella far? SJ really isn't that bad when it comes to commuting. You shouldn't have much of a problem with driving to work everyday.

I'd be getting free VTA transit with the job so the light rail commute would be either 55 mins or 1h 12 mins

Hey all,

Just want to say thank you to those who chimed in with advice as it's truly appreciated. Job interview is on Thursday so keep the suggestions coming! I'm starting to settle on living on Santa Clara County. What cities are close/semi affordable to live in close to downtown?

Thanks again!

i think san jose by the college might be the most affordable/practical. good luck on the interview, don't let the rent/sob stories dissuade you. also don't count your chickens either.

Most important thing I'm keeping in mind. Just going in and hoping for the best. The outcome is the outcome.

Then how are you Frisco finest then b

Op, don't live in Union City or Fremont. You will be bored out of your mind. try looking at miliptas, its pretty close to sj and you will be in the center of everything.
cause I moved 25mins south to not commute and make more $$$$$

You'll find apartments in your price range easily, they just won't be luxury apartments. Just find a decent area to live in, it won't take long to commute considering you start at 7. Just try to avoid commuting 101N and 880S during the morning commute

Gotta tell them u want more my man. Negotiate the crap outta that.

Also ask if they will help with relocation.

I met a girl last week and she just moved to SF. She has 4 roommates with a 2 bedroom apartment. She is living dorm room style to save on rent. Crazy what people have to do to be here.

Just check Craigslist and go from there. There is really no right place to live at this moment. It really depends on more of what you want. Rent will be rent and be the same relatively in most areas. The farther you live, the more you have to pay in commute fees which adds to your cost of living but the farther you live, the more likely you'll get a bigger place. It's an odd catch 22 but yes, look at what you want and go from there.

Most of Silicon Valley will be really boring.  My daughter's mother wants to look at houses there since she just started at her new job and no longer working from home but we're currently living in SF which is a lot better imo.  Oakland will be more fun than SV to live in

I want to live in Oakland but I'm looking my expenses I'm taking with me and what I'm gaining:

-Car note x Insurance (Under $450 tho)

-Union Dues

-8% to 401k

-Transit subsidy if I take BART/Capital corridor/CalTrain)

^^^^Sure you don't want to just live in SJ since that is where your job is? You have a car, so you can always drive into the city. Living in SJ might be about the same in rent and you won't have to commute. Oakland is becoming better but it's the best living experience ever. The beauty of the Bay is you can always drive to spots cause they are not far away. Traffic can be a factor but it's not like LA. Plus Bart will shoot you down to SF and even Oakland.
